I am going to be hooking up a battery tender pigtail to my '08 FXDWG when I get it home shortly. The bike apparently has the key-fob / alarm system ignition I hear, (not quite sure really how it works, something to do with proximity of the bike to the key-fob). When I disconnect the battery terminals to install the pigtail is that going to send the safety interlock system for a loop and now it won't start by any chance?
Thanks in advance again!!
Un-hooking the battery should not harm your bike in any way.
The security system is integrated into your turn signal relay unit and starter switch.
If your fob is not close enough to the bike with power on, a relay inside the turn signal unit will not allow your starter switch to have power to the starter.
The ECM on your bike is linked to this and has the 5 digit security code saved to it.
If however, you were to break your fob or lose it, you can not just go buy another and have it programed to your bike unless you know the 5 digit code.
most places will make it the last 5 of the vin.
If not you would need to order the new fob and a new turn signal relay unit and have your ECM relinked to it.
when ever the fob is not around your bike, the system is armed.
A turn signal relay unit with out the security system is also available.
theirs about a $100 deference.
My key fob got chewed up by my dog one night and I got the unit with out the extra system.
I just run a disk lock now.
