TY FXD2003Rider, I'm not at home right now because I am working out of state but I will order a 1 3/8 cap nut socket and when I use it I will let you know if it worked.

lol Why do you have to order it? Just go to Auto-zone. They have them in stock. That's where I got mine.

Sorry, didn't mean to insult you. It did make me laugh a little though. It's all good.

Gphil...you took the words right out of my mouth.

[edit] I did cut mine down so that inside of the socket was between 1/4" and 1/2" deep. I found the taller socket made for some interesting flights if it got away from you during reinstallation.

I was installing Ricor Intiminators and will likely be changing the springs. So I purchased a Harley Fork Cap Nut Socket Tool from MBS Manufacturing. $20 plus shipping at the manufacturer, Dennis Kirk, Amazon etc.

While lots of people have used a 35mm socket, I believe the nut is actually 1-3/8" but has the rounded corners. A 6-point 1-3/8" socket seemse to work. 35mm is 1.378" and a 1-3/8" socket is 1.375", so the difference is small. That difference does accommodate tape to preserve the finish.

Either size will work.

One thing you have to take into account is the fact that the front ends are japanese, made by Showa. Japan does not use SAE. They are metric, so the 35mm size is more than likely the correct size to use.

Also, remember the fork size is measured in mm, 49mm for late models. 49mm = 1.93in.
