Default Tail Light wiring

I replaced the socket for the tail light on my 98 wide glide. I finally got the socket to work and grounded but there is no combination of the stop wire and the run wire that will not light "both" filaments.

Anyone got an idea? This should not have been such a big project.

I have replaced the actual stop light bulb "socket" . After 12 years it was a bit rusted and worn out, as I removed the bulb and couldn't get another bulb back in it.

there are three wires coming from the back of the bike but since I have rewired this back end several times the color no longer match the original HD colors.

But there is one ground wire and two hot wires, one would be the "run" (lighting one filament) and the second would be the "stop" wire that would light the other filament ie having both lite when the brake lever is pulled (or pushed in the case of the foot pedal).

The ground wire is connected and there is not problem there. But I should be able to connect one of the wires and have one filament lite and then connect the second wire that would light the second filament when the brake lever is pulled.

But now ... whatever combination is connected of these two wires .. both filaments are lite without pulling the brake levers.

I hope that I am explaining it better.

sounds like a 'dead-short', somewhere further up in the harness....maybe try probing with a testlight, @ each lead , with a seperate gnd, then using the harness gnd....and dbl check the ground, that it is good....a bad ground is notorious for causing problems, although, it sounds more like crossed power further up....keep us posted as to your progress....
