What he said ....

The rotating mass is also a little closer to the centerline (not as far out on the shaft, which should reduce wear on the motor and trans) ... the belt weighs next to nothing ... I probably lost at least 10 lb of weight ....

The dry clutch is heavy duty/hi-perf ....

As far as the IPB bearing, the alternate to replacing it is pack the original bearing with grease and install a new seal provided with the kit ....

Based on the service manual recommendation to not replace a 'good' bearing, it seemed like I was safe going that route .... I guess we'll see ....

(Also, I guess I'm a little unclear how the chain drive lubes the bearing with primary case oil ... the level is below the derby cover opening ... I guess maybe the oil thrown off by the clutch basket/chain runs down into the bearing ...?)

I had been contemplating it for a while and originally thought I'd be out a couple grand if I wanted to do this mod, but upon further research I ended up with less than $600 in it ....

Harvey - what about your experience drove you back to the chain drive?

Here's a thought ... those who are adventurous WRT their mods could install this kit and then cut the 'housing' off their inner primary (i.e. just trim it down to be a 'backing plate') ... then it would be an open belt drive .... It occurs to me that since the engine/trans are mounted together, the only real necessity of having a backing plate is for the starter mount and to engage pinion gear ....

Probably wouldn't be that hard to do to 'convert' this setup to an open primary ....

I alway dig the 'narrow' belt drive primary look on a Panhead bobber ....

On the Shovel there was no sealed bearing. The clutch hub rode on a bearing basket. It was recommended to use the Big Fix. The Big Fix was long, single roller bearings. So occassionly you would pull the hub off. The bearings would scatter. Gease the hub. Slide the bearings in one at a time. Or you could stick the bearings to the hub with grease and try to slide the hub on.
And I never did find clutch plates that work good dry. But all that was several years ago.
I wish you success on your endeavor.

Quick ride report and update ....

I've kind of come to the conclusion that the increase in vibration is due to the removal of the compensator sprocket on the motor drive shaft ... either I've gotten a little smoother in 'managing the ride' or possibly just gotten used to it, or both, but it doesn't seem to vibrate quite as much as I noticed the first time I rode it after the install ....

I think it might be due to my lack of the proper tools (and not having gotten the clutch adjustment locknut tightened down properly), but I've adjusted the clutch a couple of times already due to some slipping ... maybe it's a break-in of the clutch ... the other thing that occurred to me is that I might have gotten a couple of oily handprints on the clutch plates when installing it that needed to burn off ... or something ...?

The hand pull is quite a bit stiffer than stock ... even with 'only' 9 coil springs (vice up to 12 it can accommodate) ... the instruction suggested that depending on riding habits one could reduce the springs to 6 ....

Due to the lack of a compensator sprocket (I assume), the bike has much more throttle response ... which I've also noticed on downshifting ... I'm a little more tuned in to matching revs when shifting down ... also on easing the throttle with my hand (my throttle grip tends to be a little sticky) ....

Just a few comments I thought might be worth posting ... I assume these characteristics would apply equally to a 3" open belt drive system if anyone is contemplating that setup ....

SURFOR Chop:

I'm not seeing any adjuster to tighten the belt in your pics, it doesn't look tight to me. Is there something we can't see or just not in the pics that tightens the belt? Very curious.

I had a Primo belt many years ago on a shovel, loved it but have been put off by pricing to add / mod on this scoot.

As I recall another benefit of belts was that it really only needed to be adjusted once after install. Slight amount of stretch from new, then never again after that.

Thanks,
t

Looks like this is an enclosed BDL system, what's the main reason of this conversion then? Quieter? Correct me if I am wrong
