Some year shovels had them stock. Enclosed belt drives have been around since the eighties. As far as an adjuster, adjuster, or a idler pulley. You don't need one. Belts only stretch so far unlike a chain.

I would understand doing this if it were in fact quieter and/or smoother, but the OP is saying there is more vibes instead of less. Guess I don't understand cost/ benefit ratio to this one. Nonetheless good post and thanks for the info.

If I recall , the 1991 Dyna Sturgis model had a belt primary and final drive, one of the only years to do so

Close. It was the 1981 Shovelhead Sturgis Edition. The Sturgis was the first Harley to have both a factory belt driven primary, as well as rear wheel drive belt. Cool motorcycle for sure but it was not terribly successful as the primary belt was enclosed, and quickly overheated the belt, causing it to break. The rear belt is of course still going strong on Harleys today.
Don't confuse the narrow enclosed primary of the Sturgis Shovel with the 3 inch open primary's of today. They are virtually indestructible, and short of a rock puncture, will last forever. They are basically pirated from the Fuel bikes running the drag strips, and can withstand triple the horsepower that ANY street Harley could throw at it. But they are not enclosed, nor do they resemble anything stock. I have run MANY open belt primary's in the past, but never enclosed like SURFORCHOP. If I was spending the money for a belt driven primary, I wanted to see that sucker spinning around and making noise, not hidden and enclosed in a primary!

I have seen SURFORCHOPS bike up close. He vented his setup, and yes, he did the enclosed primary because they are light weight, and eliminate the oil bath chain. I have not seen him post in a while, but I would love to hear an update of how his setup is working now a days.

Here's a clip of the dual belt Sturgis:

I've been running a BDL primary for 17 yrs and if properly adjusted it is smoother than a compensator set up. The clutch is both strong and progressive. For grins I occaisionally have run at the local 1/8 mi dragstrip (for tuning purposes, of course).
The clutch plates are compatible with HD standard.
I couldn't ask for a more reliable primary drive.

PS. I've never felt the need for more that the basic 6 springs, it don't slip. Best run on 1/8 mi was 8.2@84 mph. have been more than happy with the 1 3/4" wide belt.

A little update for the curious ...

I went through a few belts well before the expected life ... at first I thought it was an issue with alignment ... got that kink worked out ... then, a guy at the parts store who I showed my belt to said it looked like the wear was heat related ...

So, I did a little self-help venting of the primary cover ...

Ha ha ... yeah ... didn't want to leave any doubt about it ...

You still got your old Evo Low Rider? ... saw you added a Fat Boy to the stable and now a 110th Ann. Road King ... I like what you've done with it ...

Happy Turkey Day!
