The mass of a vehicle passing into the loop causes eddy currents to change the inductance. This signals the traffic controller. The controller will according to programming change the light. Some wil do it right away some will not.
Depending on how strong the magnent is will determine if it will help. You can stop your engine and restart it. The field it generates is stronger than a whole bag of the little magnets.
They stopped using weight plates 30 years ago. You might be talking about a temp loop. They make them to be bolted to the street if it is going to take a long time to fix the above ground and running fixed times will cause disaster.
In Memphis we ran a controller called the EPAC. Times are programmed into it for each phase at the intersection from the through lanes, turn lanes and even the crosswalk.
They have alternate times that it can switch to for rush hour's. But all times are still dependent on traffic flow detected by the loops.
The problem with the detectors is they are flaky at best. The older ones had to be hand tuned. (Just dials on the front to set sensitivity). The new ones auto tune.
Extreme temperature will cause them to go out of tune. A cut that is not sealed correctly can allow water in that will cause problems. Once the asphalt starts to crack it is only a matter of time before the loop is busied out. The the timing for that phase will run max.
Find out the number for the Traffic Signal Maintenance depart for your city. Call them and tell them about the intersection. Memphis and surrounding area is 901.528.2844. It's in the phone book under city government.
Well, bikes finally came out of storage 2 weeks ago. Sorry if I didn't get around to posting sooner, but living in Northern Michigan, we actually had SNOW the second week of May. To the poster who opined that only those of us living in "Deliverance" might still have those old sensors............... well, I hate to burst your bubble, but I do live in a RURAL area and the village next door to us is named "PODUNK".
As for whether it works or not......... I've not ridden enough to be able to say one way or the other. I'm sure I was one of the many suckered into this product.......and thus the original post. If nothing else, I've got one hell of a magnet for household use.
I'll report more at the end of the season. We got through MANY rural 2 bit, 1 light towns around our neck of the woods.....so I'll let ya all know.
No you did not waste your money. I have a signal sorcorer. Basically a "special" magnet. It does not work on every light for the various reasons mentioned above. However, the comparison on several lights that I had to wait at and then finally run before I got the thing and now they change as I am pulling up to them. Of course that is only if cross traffic is clear.
