If you're going to have the dealer do the 1k, then I would use regular dino oil instead of synthetic, because they're going to change it again when you bring it in.

Dude, ride your bike. At the next paycheck (and don't put it off) buy a service manual, oil for 3 holes, filter, O rings, and do the service. Keep the receipts, and write the mileage down as slightly below the 1000 mile mark, while you mark off the service items on the manual checklist. There's no way the dealer can tell if you went to 1500 miles without the service (unless you have a mechanical failure (which is extremely unlikely)), but you don't want to abuse your bike by ignoring it's mechanical needs. Does something suddenly happen at 1000 miles....no, but getting the fluids changed, belt adjusted, clutch adjusted, and bolts checked will allow your bike to have a long and happy life. You say you're mechanically inclined...then it's no big deal.

My 1K service cost $230 using Mobil 1. a few days after service I had a loose connection on the battery cable, Less than a thousand miles later I developed a clunk in the front end. Checking out the steering head bearings I found the steering head nut was completely loose to the point I took it off with my fingers. Both of those items are supposed to be checked during 1K service. After finding the loose steering head I went through the checks myself to make sure they didn't skip anything else. I guess I basically paid $230 bucks for an oil change. I just did the 5K service myself.

No disrespect but maybe you need anew job, really man if you cant afford to do a service you have bigger issues that weather to do a service yourself, work out a budget etc get you money sorted.
Looks like the RastaMan needs to get his prioriteis in order... or maybe he already has. Might have to buy the bunk instead of the sweet sticky stuff ..

At 1500 miles I would have already done two motor oil changes IMO. I feel the first one should be done around 250 miles. This gets all of the initial crap out early.

this is exactly the reason i avoid dealers. I personally think it is ridiculous that every few hundred miles I need to take it in to have it serviced. These are very basic machines and the same basic maintenance laws apply to them as say a car or lawn mower. Dont abuse them, change out fluids regularly, and be observant of anything out of the ordinary. I dont think you need to pay a mechanic 300 to do this for you...
really the only thing involved in the full service that will cost anything (unless you dont have the tools) is the oil and filter. the rest is just inspections and torque checking. so all your paying the dealer is for the oils, filter, and their labor to do the service.
if you can swing the oils and filters and have the tools to do the rest, your all good. but the first 60 bux you get, go buy the manual (it will pay for itself instantly). amosil 20w50 is good for engine and primary, and 75w110/90 will be better for your tranny.

i'm not trying to bash you but if you're that strapped then you probably should not have bought a first bike. there's a reason it's called HD.. and it's not harley davidson.. it's Hundred Dollars because everything is at least a hundred dollars. These things are expensive. If you're sweating a first service... ouch.
Maybe you should have bought a honda..
