Default Arghhh...Service problem...

All right guys, I need your help. So I can't afford a 1,000 mile service from either the dealer or an Indy so my question is this...Could I get by with just changing my oil for right now until I can afford to get the service done? I don't have a service manual yet either, but i can change the oil (I am handy), just planned on paying for the first service and doing the rest on my own. I really want to ride my bike and don't want to wait another 2 weeks until I get paid...FWIW, I am switching to Amsoil 20w50. Could I just change the fluids and get bu until I can have the full service done? HELP

You think you could also do the tranny and chaincase fluids? The rest are mostly inspections and adjustments.

Oh most certainly !!!! As I said, I am mechanically inclined, just kinda broke right now and my bike has 1500 miles on it already. I have the money for the oil, just not the full service...so that is why I was asking the question. Thanks for responding...Any other suggestions from you forum members?

Hey rastajacob, my opinion and it's only my opinion is you have two choices, and only two choices.
Choice A, let the dealer do the 1000 mile checkup.
Choice B, buy a service manual and do what the dealer would of done on the one thousand mile checkup.

I do about 99.9% of my own maintenance to my bike, but I had the dealer do the 1000 checkup, partly because I bought the bike second hand with 2100 miles on it, so previous owner had 1000 serivce done at dealer, lol. You don't know this bike mechanically enough at this point to know what is right/wrong, or potential problems. That's why I would strongly suggest have the dealer do the first checkup. If you are really wanting to get into it yourself, then buy the factory service manual and do all the stuff spelled out for the 1000 mile checkup. No disrespect but changing the oil is not even close to cutting it man, you also have to think about, your warranty since you still have a warranty, if you don't have a dealer do it, then you need documented work, receipts showing that work was done, ie, oils, orings, filters, etc, otherwise you might have issues trying to get warranty work done should you need it.

I know you wanna ride the dog **** out of it now man, and that's all good, but your investment/safety ought to come first then fun factor, just my .02 cents.

If your low on $$$, just change the engine oil, and do a visual inspection on everything else. When you do get paid, pick up all the supplies your gonna need so you'll have them for the next time. +1 on the manual, it'll tell you everything your gonna need and how to do the work.

What's the rough price of a 1000mile checkup at the dealer?
