Possible Issue with Master Cylinder-Caused by Handle Bars???
In the (first) picture below you'll see on the right side of the MC some brake fluid leaking. It's much more noticeable in person. I've finally put this together and believe its caused by the angle of the Z-Bars. When the bike is at rest (Second pic) on the jiffy stand the MC is level as well as the fluid inside it. But I've noticed after riding about an hour or two the seeping of fluid returns b/c of the downward angle of the MC.
Questions-
Has anyone else experienced this?
Should I change the seal, but would it just happen again?
swap out the bars to something without a downward angle?
The angle of the bars has nothing to do with it. It should be completely sealed, which means you can hang it upside down and it should not leak. Like Drew said try a new gasket.
This is not an uncommon problem. Just replace the gasket/seal and as you tighten the screws, do so in in an alternating pattern, adding partial torque to one screw and then the other until they are snug.
Check the MC cap for warpage or damage to the lip that the seal contacts.
I had the same problem with the stock handle bars a while back. some one had overtightened them presale. Replaced gasket and made sure it wasn't too tight. has worked well ever since.
Mine did it so bad that the fluid took the paint off, it is common on the late ones and you just need to get a new gasket. You can probably talk them into giving you one if you talk to service. don’t let it get on your paint, put a rag on your tank until you get it fixed. I bought a take off one to replace mine and never changed it out and now the insurance co is replacing it anyway because it got mangled in the accident. Go Figure.
