If you're somewhat mechanically inclined, get the service manual (it's straightforward and well illustrated/written). Follow the 1K recommendations (photocopy maintenance page, and check off the items as you go, write date and mileage at top of page), keep receipts for oils, o-rings and filter. Pretty simple stuff, and you'll learn a bit about the bike.
Of course, if the 1K came with the purchase, it only makes sense to have them do it.....then check bike with your service manual to confirm. I'm sure, like any business, some are great, and some are just rip-off artists. Nobody, not even the best, care about your bike like you do.
