About to be coming up on this and I'm just curious if things like that "have" to be done at harley stealerships to keep the warranty valid or anything? Maybe a stupid question but it's my first harley
I'm sure I'd save money and would feel better about taking it to the indie right down the road.
Take it to the dealer and let them do what they need to do. It's not just about changing the fluids. It's only a few bucks more than what an Indy is going to charge and it still maintians the factory coverage. If you decide to go the Indy route and even if you keep all the reciepts and records, Good luck dealing with the MOCO if something does go "south" on the bike while you own it.They've got floors of lawyers they keep on retainer for just such an occasion. And they've probably got deeper pockets too.
When I picked my bike up and was about to ride off on it the salesman said "we'll see you for the 1,000 mile service". I said "no you won't, if I can't perform simple maintenance on it then I don't have any business owning it. I'm not going to pay some one to do what I can do". He said that's fine, lots of people prefer to do that, just make sure I keep all of my receipts in case there is any warranty work needed in the future. Another thing to remember about oil changes. If you do them yourself then buy the oil and filter from the dealer. That way along with your receipt they will also have a record of your purchase in their computer.

I had HD do my 1k just because it was the first service and I was still waiting for my book to come in. 5k and beyond is all me!! I don't have my receipts, but I'm an AMSOIL dealer so I can just logon and print them out. It depends on your local HD also!! I asked them before I started doing my own service and they said if it comes in and the oil is all sludged up then the know I haven't been doing my service. If it has issues and it looks like good oil then they will do the warranty work.
Honestly after the 1K it'll be tough to let the dealer have my bike again. The SYN3 was crap and the price is outrageous for the service. With AMSOIL fluids and AMSOIL chrome filter I spend about $45 bucks. A lot better then $300 and get my bike back greasy and oily and several days later.
If you go through the dealership, double check their work or you'll have a scare like below.
I understand not all dealerships are like this, but here's another thread where the dealer didn't add enough oil. This one was in the primary. Like I said double check their work or do it yourself. I can write you an SOP since I know you miss them...lol!! Or a HDSOP!!
