Do get the filter and the shop manual and primary derby gasket kit at your dealer. Then go to advance auto parts and get 4 qts of Mobil1Vtwin 20w50 and one quart of Mobil1 75w90 or 75w140 gear oil. (gear oil in the trans)
This will cost you about $125 and whatever the spoke wrench costs. You will also need a T-27 torx bit for the derby cover screws but you can go to true value hardware and get 5 SS allen headed socket cap screws the same length & thread as the screws and be done with the torx screws for $2.
BTW, my dealer does the 1000 mile for free so you might want to ask first. If you do decide to do your own. Then make a log book and keep receipts/date/mileage and work done to keep up with warranty requirements.
I had total shock when i went into a service dept out here and the wanted 695$ for the 1K service! WOW i thought.
can you imagine a auto shop trying to get that kind of money for and oil change?
WTF? For $695 you can do the 1000 mile service and completely outfit yourself with all of the tools you will need to do any work on your bike plus all of the shop manuals etc.
My girl is debating the very same thing with her sporty. I'm telling her that if the bike is running/riding solid, I wouldn't take it in. She'll be changing the fluids herself, with me there drinking beer watching, holding her t-shirt and bra for her so she don't get it dirty. It was said earlier that you should keep a log book of all that ya do, when ya do it, and all the paperwork. I think that comes in way handy if ya ever wanna sell it. Just my $.02
the dealer near here is aroudn 330 or so ... too bad to hear they all just do the fluids and nothing else, really need a tech to look over a used bike purchase to make sure I'm riding a safe scoot - any major things I should look for (since they wont) on a 09 street bob?
any bolts etc. that are known to want to loosen up? sure hate for my bars to come off on a ride sometime.....!
I just bought a 2010 FXDC and am coming up on the 1,000M service dealio myself. I'm starting to think that the Hardly Dangerous dealer is getting fat, real fat, on those things.
Sounds to me like, they try to hold you hostage on the warranty, take your bike in, change the fluids and then stare at it for a while. Then later on if something really DOES go wrong, they just charge the Factory for it anyway.
Gonna look around and see if I can find an independent who will 'sign off' on the 1K checkup and see if I can save some buckaroos.
'Check the spokes' my dyin ****. Although I do get a little front-end wobble around 140MPH. Maybe I should have them look at that.
Damn, you guys are making me worry already about my 1,000 miles service!
I would love to try to do it all myself but I literally can't, maybe I could change fluids but the problem is that in our shared garage that we have for the apartment complex I live in there is a strict no-wrenching policy... which I can understand as well.
I know this is gonna bug the hell out of me too, maybe it's just me but if I pay good money for someone else to do something for me I expect it to be done thoroughly and well!

i had a single car garage at my last apartment - same policy, but i still converted the 4 wheel manual drums on my 68 mustang to power disc brakes...boy were they pissed after about 6 weeks of me banging away on it (especially hammering the studs out of the axle shafts at about 0900 sunday morning)
Damn, I knew one of these days I would see one of you guys with my bike. Haven't taken mine in for 1000 mile yet but since I have warranty work to do, it will be going in soon. Have you had any problems with your ignition yet? Anywaym I stole my bike in the dealership from some great big guy so I could get the black ice denim bike like yours. Now I think it is a girl bike....lol. She's beautiful like mine, Enjoy!
