I dont understand why you guys love to bash and bad mouth Harley Dealers as if they are all a bunch of good for nothing SOB'S. No one FORCES you to go there. All you have to do is CALL and ask how much they charge. If you dont like it......go somewhere else or do it yourself. But to rant, rave and rail against them is ridiculous. The 1000 mile VERY FIRST maintenance inspection is probably one of the MOST IMPORTANT inspections you do to be sure the bike is running right and things are tight as they should be. Remember, if you do it yourself.......YOUR NEW BIKE WARRANTY COULD BE NULL AND VOID.
It's great if you have the talent, tools and know how to wrench it yourself and save some $$$. There are plenty of us who cant and appreciate the fact that there are Good DEALERS and GOOD MECHANICS out there to take care of people like me. If one dealer doesn't give you a good price........call another. Most cities have several to choose from.
I'm glad I'm able to do my business with a dealer who hires and support mechanics (and their families) just trying to earn a living. I'll get off my soap box now.
In 2007 my 1000K maintenance service call at Wolverine Harley Davidson was: $240.75
Do get the filter and the shop manual and primary derby gasket kit at your dealer. Then go to advance auto parts and get 4 qts of Mobil1Vtwin 20w50 and one quart of Mobil1 75w90 or 75w140 gear oil. (gear oil in the trans)
This will cost you about $125 and whatever the spoke wrench costs. You will also need a T-27 torx bit for the derby cover screws but you can go to true value hardware and get 5 SS allen headed socket cap screws the same length & thread as the screws and be done with the torx screws for $2.
BTW, my dealer does the 1000 mile for free so you might want to ask first. If you do decide to do your own. Then make a log book and keep receipts/date/mileage and work done to keep up with warranty requirements.
you dont need to change the primary derby cover gasket unless you destroy it taken it off,you dont half to torque the cover either just tighten it up
My dealer qoted about 400.00. I had them throw it in the deal after I negotiated the price. I agree with WLOS that the first service is the most important. The dealer will know f something is wrong by checking the fluids for the first time. However, I seriously doubt they do much more than that. I will be doing the remaining services myself when possible.
On another note, the BMW dealers make the HD dealers look like walmart pricing. I was quoted 1200.00 for the 12K service on my LT. I did it myself for under 200.00.
I just had a 5K done in December 2009. It ran $451.23 Plus I needed a new rear tire which I bought through Motorcycle Superstore Dunlop K591 150/70VB-17( total delivered price $129.99) plus another $120.31 for Tube, Rim Band, Snap Cord and Labor to remove the old, mount and balance and reinstall the new one.

If you are one that can do things your self then I would recommend doing it your self.
I just changed mine for the 6th time. The with the cost for all the supplies for all 6, cost of a service manual, and even a few tools I needed to buy, I am still at less than they quoted me for the 1k service.
If you have a good dealer that you trust that will do everything they are suppose to and gives a fair price then may not be a bad option. My local dealer is crap but like some others said there are some good ones out there.
I broke down and went to my indie today because I still don't have my service manual and my tools are still en route. I can't complain though, 190 bucks out the door and that was with royal purple in all holes. **** the ridiculous costs I'm seeing from some of these dealers.
I'd rather support my local indie anyway and they have an awesome mom n pop type grill so you can get some AWESOME grub while you wait.
this is my take on the dealer service::If they were actually doing the service that is requested by your owners manual mileage intervalls why dose eveyone never see the completed sevice form that the manuals show with the mechanics initals by each service item that needs to be done,INstead you get a reciept that says 5000 mile service completed 650.00 dollars.the only reason for this bs is because they are not doing a dammn thing but changing your fluids!!!!!
Take the money you would spend at the stealership and buy a J&S jack and do it yourself. There'a all kinds of videos on you tube and what not that will show you how to adjust the clutch pack and other stuff you'll need to do.

This is totally untrue. You're allowed to do your own work as long as you keep your receipts and can show that what you've done is according to the Harley recommended maintenance schedule and used parts and fluids according to the manual. I don't see people in this thread bashing the harley dealers as much as balking at the price of the 1K service for what is being performed by the dealership. Your warranty doesn't just become null and void totally anyway. If you have a problem with your bike and the dealer won't warranty a claim for a part for some reason that doesn't mean that they can void out your whole warranty just because you changed your own fluids... ridiculous thinking.
