Default HELP!!! Tail Light Wiring

Purchased a side mount license plate holder/tail light for my '06 Street Bob. It has two wires, green and black.

I have two wires that come from the harness... Red w/ yellow stripe (brake light) and blue (running light). I hooked the black wire to my ground wire and the red/yellow striped wire to the green wire... this gives me a brake light, but nowhere to put the blue wire for a running light! What am I doing wrong??? It's supposed to function as a brake light and running light.

Are there two bulbs in your new light?

I think I have a similar side mount light, does it have a glass lens that has "STOP" molded into it?

Anyways, that style of light works like this. Your hot wires (running and brake) get connected to each of the wires in the light. The license plate frame needs to have a good ground with the frame. I ended up running a small ground wire from the license frame to the swingarm. The paint on the license frame and paint on the swingarm prevented a nice ground.

So, power runs from your wires thru the bulbs then grounds to the license frame which is grounded to the frame.

Thanks Jim, mine is as you described, but I got the plain glass lens version that has a dual filament bulb... I assume one is the running filament and the other (or both?) light up for the brake light. The only way I can get it to do anything now is if I hook the black wire to my bikes ground wire, and then the other wire from the back of the light to the brake wire, but that leaves me with no running light.
