I've had 'em both. I ride in all types of weather, I will not ride without a windshield.
I hated the QD HD shield. SO much buffeting I couldn't believe it. Here I bought a bike that's supposed to be a great highway cruiser, and I couldn't even take it on the highway! I literally couldn't see a thing because of all the eyeball pinball. I cut it down quite a bit, but it still sucked.
The Windvest is awesome. Great shield, just enough protection and no buffeting when adjusted properly. The only reason I took it off is because I stumbled across a fairing from the FXDXT.
Don't listen to the "drive your car" morons.
I had the same experience with the HD windshield and tried cutting it down and tilting to different angles and still buffeting so bad you cant read highway signs.
I just got a 16" tall Windvest, I'm not done fine tuning yet but the buffeting is so under control now, I'm happy that I have a solution for longer trips.
I also bought Memphis Shades Lowers and have them installed and they helped even more. I bought the Cee Bailey summer shield for the Windvest but have not tried it yet, I have enough stuff to experiment with for now. I might do a seperate post with some pictures later. This is all coming from a person who HATES windshields, never had any luck with them till now and the Windvest looks OK on my Lowrider.
Again, how well do the windvests work in the rain? Never had any type of shield and have ridden an ironbutt 1K, and am planning another one this year. Something that could help in rain might be worth it.

I haven't ridden in the rain - but as long as the airflow goes over your head, it should be fine. The Summer shield will only keep the wind off your chest, but the standard windvest shield will deflect the air over your helmet. My guess is you'll be fine in the rain.

It's not as effective in the rain because it's not as big a shield. You will get wetter and still feel the needles in your face at high speed. I didn't get mine for the rain. I make every effort not to ride in the rain for safety sake as much as comfort.
Again, if anyone is looking a summer shield for your WV mounts, let me know. I've got one like new that I'll never use.
