I will be, sometime soon, picking up a set of V&H Big Radius pipes for my 2010 WG. I was wondering if it is mandatory to buy the fuel controller for the EFI / ECU.
I'd like to avoid having to do this immediately unless it's absoloutely necessary. I've always been under the impression that changing the exhaust _doesnt_ require an EFI/ECU reprogram but if you don't the bike doesnt 'benefit' as much.
I'll be calling a bunch of harley dealers to get their feedback as well. Has anyone installed full exhaust without an EFI/ECU reprogram?
you can look around on here and find this post, and get as many differant responses as you have post. but heres is my opinion.
You dont HAVE to change it, but it is recommended. As a lot of guys will tell you, if your going to be shelling out that kind of money for the exhaust, save another month or 2 and get the stage 1 and P.C. for it as well.
If you do decide to just change the exhaust, keep an eye on your sparkplugs to make sure you are not fouling them to bad.
If you are not changing the air intake and only the exhaust NO, you do not need to add an EFI controller. It's the amount of air coming in that makes the biggest difference, you can't exhaust more than it consumes.
You can change the intake and still not add an EFI controller, but you will run hotter and if you get stuck in traffic you will experience the joy of the front cylinder shut down when it gets hot among other things.
Keep your eyes open on ebay and you might find a dealer closing them out from stock, I did and got a NOS PC III for 200 shipped to my door.
change the exhaust and enjoy. The ecu will go back to stock parameters set at 14.7:1 afr. Also the stock settings can cause a little decel popping through the exhaust. You can probably change the A/C as well and not install fuel management, of course your not gonna get much additional performance by doing this. The bike will not run any hotter if you increase the flow of air through the motor unless the motor is actually being run too lean(over 14.7:1).

The ECU will adapt to the minor change created by the different exhaust system. Changing the breather too will create enough difference that you may want a fuel/air management solution.
Be sure to come back here and post what you hear from the dealers you call. I'm sure you will get a different answer from each one you call just like you will get a different response here from different people.
When I bought my Big Radius, the first question the parts guy asked me was if I had a fuelpak, as if it was a pre-requisite and he didn't even ask about the air cleaner, as if it didn't matter if I was running stock a/c or not. Turned out I already had a stage 1 a/c and a fuelpak, so I just added the pipes and reprogrammed the fuelpak for them.
Anyway, the reason I already had a fuelpak was because I had V&H slipons before and was getting some decel popping and, just to be safe, I added the fuelpak which required me to also add the a/c.
You'll probably be okay just adding the pipes but I'd go ahead and add the other stuff as soon as my budget would support it. If nothing else, the bike will run cooler and will run better and you will feel a performance difference.
So far both dealers I have called have said the same thing. You must upgrade the air cleaner and remap the ECU via a fuelpak remap or the harley race tuner. The bike will run like crap blah blah blah.
