you won't necessarily tear up the grips when i put my new grips on my factory grips i twisted back and forth and the clutch side slide right off after some twisting one way then the other way they broke free. Now the new grips i put on ya they ain't going anywhere for a while with the glue i put on them
Sometimes if your are careful with a heatgun or hairdryer you can pull the left grip off without tearing it up,the idea is to get the glue hot without melting the grip.
You can easily remove the left glued on grip with compressed air....
Once you have removed the switch assy. and clutch lever mount, try to pull up on the grip where it meets the bar once you have a little lifted up start with the air nozzle and start blasting some air under the grip keep moving around the grip with the nozzle. I use a air nozzle with a 1/4'' x 4'' extention on it.. Works like a charm grip comes off without any dammage..
Chrome is one of the least 'forgiving' things in the world to paint. It is virtually non-porous and requires a special etching primer.
If you want to keep the bars, for whatever reason, look into having them powdercoated by a reputable place. Powder coat can chip but otherwise is virtually indestructible.
Naturally, you may want to get blackened riser clamps and maybe even black risers.
Or not.
Check out ebay. You can prolly get new ones for a good price.
I've spray painted many sets of chrome bars and the truth is no matter how carefull you are you'll probably end up scratching them putting them back on.If you're good at masking you could probably get a roll of painters tape and some old sheets and paint them in place, you'd most likely end up having to touch up paint them anyway if you took them off and put them back on.The best advice you've got so far is to either have them powder coated or buy a set of black bars.I got a set of black powder coated Santee 12" apes on Ebay for less than $70.Joe will probably powder coat yours for less but then you have shipping you do the math.Another idea I thought looked kinda cool was wrapping them in black leather you might want to try that if it goes with the look you're going for.
