nothing new getting hassled on the sickle.

nothing new getting hassled on the sickle for loud pipes.

been like that for 45 years I know of.
likely much longer than that.

lawman is always right on the side of the road.
fighting is done in court.

if you're clearly in the right, judge might cut you loose.

if you are even slightly on the wrong side of the law
the judge will surely whack that gavel down
and say
*I don't want to see you ugly *** again*

about three years ago I'm on the interstate.

stealth cop stealthed up behind me.

First question - does that thing have a speedometer on it??

Yessir.

does it work??

Yessir.

You were hitting 95.

Yessir, sorry about that.

License and insurance card please.

Says 2006 SuperGlide here.

Yessir, double aught six.

WHAT HAPPENED to it??

I like to build ****, sir.

So, he proceeds to circle my machine.

The VIN gonna match these papers??

Yessir, the numbers are on this side.

What kinda exhaust is that??

Vance and Hines, sir.

How loud is it??

I don't know, want me to start it up??

Yeah.
then after about a second and a half -
Shut it off.
Yeah,
it's loud.
Where's the mufflers??

The baffles are inside, sir.

Law says mufflers, not baffles.

I can't see your license plate sticker.
What's it say??

November, sir.

Well, I can't see it from here.

As another five minutes of lecture proceeds, I am tabulating the damage.
Tickets in Tejas ain't cheap.
150-200 for each infraction.
I figure I'm at about 7-800 already.
The stealth cops here pride themselves on multiple infraction incidents.

So, then he hands my paperwork back to me,
and says -
"you need to slow it down a bit".

Yessir. have a nice day.

60 some years ago my dad sold his Harley 45 and bought a new 74. First order of business was to fashion some straight pipes using automobile exhaust pipe. As all his riding buddies had done he got two large cow bells, cut the small end off and hammered it into a round hole and welded the bells to the end of his pipes. Came out looking good and to this young lad the sound of several Harleys pulling away on a Saturday morning was a sight and sound to behold. Problem was dad got a ticket right away for loud pipes. He was pretty creative and fashioned a butterfly valve setup that he could open and close with a car choke cable anchored somewhere on the side of the bike. He mounted the butterflys(which had holes drilled in it) into the end of the cow bells. When he came into town he would close the butterfly and quiet the pipes and once on the road he could open them up.

Wonder why pipes today don't have some sort of quieting baffle setup that you could engage when necessary.

Foo...I bet that sounded pretty darn cool. Secondly, I know when I hit towns as my TH can bark pretty loud I just throttle down and adhere to the posted limits. I don't usually garner a second glance from anyone. Could be I'm just ugly and a second glance would cause retina damage.

I don't know....In all my 23 yrs driving I have heard of only one person in a car getting a noise violation ticket and would you believe it was with a stock car stereo in a saturn vue. lol It wasn't that loud.

Whats the saying "if it's too loud, you're too old." I highly doubt the noise ordinance crap is about quality of life.

it can't be. it's about revenue.

if i'm tearing down a street ripping thru gears at WOT and pass you standing on a corner, how long do you really hear my bike for?

10 seconds as i approach and another 20 if i'm really laying on it heavy as i go by? those 30 seconds are enough for all these laws?

there's a main road by my house with a warehouse on it where 18 wheel rigs pick up and drop off loads of...who knows what.

i was following my dad home from picking his bike up from our local indy shop, him on his street glide, full vance and hines exhaust PCIII and no engine mods, me behind him in my jeep.

cop lights him up and pulls him over half a block from this warehouse to cite him for loud pipes.

his bike is far from obnoxiously loud...FAR from it.

i pulled over behind to wait for him and no joke as we're sitting there this rig is offloading and the rig operator is sitting in the cab pulling the horn wire to get someone behind the truck's attention.

the cop and my dad were literally yelling back and forth to talk over the horn blaring.

nice ticket for my pops, nothing to speak of for the horn blowing rig operator...so it's really got NOTHING to do with noise.

Aftermarket exhaust probably gives them probable cause and the officer was probably being sarcastic.

I can hear bikes for way longer than 30 seconds and from miles away. Just goes to show we could be annoying more than just the people in our imediate vacinity.

Now what surprises me in this a debate is that nobody had brought up the tweaked diesel pick-ups. Some of those rigs are loud!

I couldn't agree more with the noise issue, but I wouldn't blame it all on the cops. Yeah they can make your life miserable sometimes, bun hey it's a job. Just cause they have to enforce something don't mean that's their personal opinion, they just have to follow orders so they can get through the day. Just like in the military, I'm sure all of my military brothers out there will agree when I say we hav to do some shitty stuff sometimes, but that's the nature of the beast. You may not agree with what your orders are, but unless they are ethically wrong or place you in uneccesary danger you gotta follow em.

First thing out of my mouth would have been... "am I required by law to consent to this complimentary check?"

It's also a slick way to

1. do a background check of the rider.
2. do a search for outstanding unpaid tickets and / or warrants.
3. compile a list of plate numbers & the "official" dB readings taken to form a data base.

Complimentary my .............. Like doing a "Complimentary" breathalizer check. Who are they kidding.
