Have a question about slip on exhaust pipes for a 2009 Fatbob. Why is it that the dealership wont install any other that the screaming eagles, or they require you to install the preformance upgrade kit. My question is, Is it really required to have the kit.
Go for it. I did the SE Heavy Breather and recalibration at HD as I already had the original race SE slip on mufflers installed. Woke up the bike and still under warranty being HD did the recalibration and SE air intake. Others EFI systems intercept the signal.
They will only install something that is "street legal" at your dealer is what it sounds like. Buy what you want online and install it yourself. It is simple. As far as the tuner, it will run much better with a tuner than without. Someone else can explain the whole tuner thing for you.
From what I've read, it depends on baffle size. I have Rush slip-ons with 2" baffles on my 2010 Far Bob and haven't had any issues. I heard if you go over 2" you should get it tuned.
Required by who? Harley? HD dealers like to scare you into buying the race tuner or a download because they make big money off of it. And they will tell you you have to tune as a CYA. They won't vouch for any other aftermarket part because they haven't tested them.
You don't need a tuner or other mods regardless of any changes to the exhaust, the air filter restricts the air flow and the ECU adapts nicely to the minor changes.
Start toying with the air filter and you may want to also toy with the tune, but you are not required to. There are a lot of guys here that just ride.
BTW, although some of the SE parts are real good, you can liven up the bike and get a better tune for a lot less money.

If you want to really make your bike run cool, add torque and sound nice, cut out the cat converter in the header pipes and install 1.75" Rush mufflers. The guys are work were all drooling today, loved the deep sound. Just a thought - RK.
Get the slip ons you want and then look into Nightrider.com's XIED as a cheap fix. The guys who spent more on a tuner and dyno never like this idea, but search for the threads on it and there are tons of happy riders out there who only spent $200 - $100 for used Rush slip ons and $100 for the XIED.
you need a tuner if you increase air flow at both ends in and out. if you just replace one or the other air filter or pipes the factory ecm will make the needed adjustment. this info was given to me by a HD trained mechanic.
