Default LED Fuel gauge - WTF ?

So I bought a Black Diamond LED fuel gauge to match the gas cap on my '10 SB. Get the part, do the wiring which is simple enough and hook everything up, lights up on the first try (no really, 3 wires that go in the same place as the stockers...).

However, when I clip it in place, it doesn't clip on all 4 corners. Lower right won't clip at all. Bring the darn thing back to the dealer which has it checked out by a service guy, they finally decide to replace it.

Drive up there today because the part is in, quickly unscrew the wires from the one on the bike and exchange it for the new part, screw back the wires in, and ... the darn thing still doesn't clip in the lower right.

3 service/parts guys later and a round of all the Dyna's on the showroom, they say "badly designed 200$ part" and offer to just reimburse me if I wish. I tell them I'll think about it.

No seriously, the stock unit clips right in, this one has the same clips on the side and is listed as fitting my bike, what the hell is wrong ?

EDIT :

Finally took a pic of it :

Got a part number? I had to modify mine to fit into my '07, but I don't know about the 10's.

I got one for my '10 Fat Bob, and I had to pull the existing wires out and put in new ones that came with the gauge because the stock gauge had them permanently connected. (the replacement gauge came with the three wires that need to be screwed in while the stock part had them clipped in on a box on the gauge itself.

Could it be that the dealer is ordering you the wrong gauge? My part # was 75358-10. It says it's multi fit, but I'm not sure if it's the same that would go on the SB...

I just pulled out my catalog and I think the one I have would fit your bike...

If they got you the 75357-10 part it won't fit a 2010...

Yeah, changed out all the wires, even went the lazy route of cutting the stock harness so I didn't have to pull the terminals out of the connector.

Used everything in the kit for the wiring, a real breeze.

Yep, it's a 75358-10, says on the box that it fits '09 later Dyna, except FXD (because they obviously don't have the gas gauge in that spot). So it is the right part for my bike...

Does yours clip on all 4 corners and sit kinda flush with the tank ?

I did check out my tank, and it has all the tabs in the hole, nothing is dented, and the stock unit will clip in there without a hitch.

Lol - I went the same route and just clipped the wires on the stock harness too. I don't remember anything that had to clip on though. Do you mean the gauge itself? I remember just putting mine on and it felt snug enough when I put it on. No snapping/clipping though. Now I'm wondering if it's on right lol.

Edit: I just ran out and took a look at it. Mine didn't snap either. It's not sitting lush against the tank, but neither does the gas cap. They look the same to me. Think it could be an issue that it isn't snapped down? probably not that bad in case something goes wrong and you need to fix or replace it. The stock one wasn't in there all that tight either. Only thing I'm wondering is if water can get in there - not like the water would go in the tank anyway. It'd probably just drip down through the hole at the bottom.

I'll take pics when I get out today so we can compare, yes I was talking about the gauge itself. There's 4 tabs on it on the side and 2 guides on each end and it's supposed to clip onto the 4 sorta bumps inside the hole in the tank.

If yours is like mine... wow, the dealer was right and it is a design issue... I've been riding with it like this all week though while waiting for the replacement and it's solidly stuck there and won't move anyway.

I've got the "chrome" version on my bike and I really like it . .. but now for the bad news . .about 4 hours of riding in the rain and you'll loose 2-3 LCD's in the middle . . .the good news is that once you get back in the dry and it heats up they come back.

Not real impressed for what I had to pay for the damn thing .. . but it does look nice.

Have a good one,
Dave
