I can't believe how difficult they made this (what should be) simple task. Removing one from a Fat Boy style headlight, a snap! On my 2009 FXDB, (for me), damned near impossible! The nut, is so close to the rim itself, that I can't manage to get a grasp on it with any tools I have to unscrew the other side, so it just spins around on me. Any suggestions?
BTW, (the reason I am removing the ring in the first place), do the stock wires have a ground wire inside the bucket? I am taking the old headlight off to install a 7" headlight and if I can get the wires out of the bucket and there is no ground, should be fairly easy to get installed (just that damned trim ring!!).
Just push on the nut and hold it with your finger instead of trying to get a wrench on it, and unscrew the phillips head screw on the other end. Same bike, got mine off in a few seconds, but maybe I just got lucky, good luck with it.

That was what I tried first. Impossible, at least on mine. No matter how hard I push, it just spins around from how tight it is.
Just spent another half hour wrestling with this piece of crap. Am I really the only one to have this issue? I am about to use a saw to cut the whole wring off if I can't get it off by tomorrow..

No you are not the only one to have this problem. Mine was also too tight to hold with my fingers. Finally used a 4" pair needle nose to get enough grip to get the nut off. Mine was completely stripped. Definitely designed by an Aggie.

Just got it, whew!! Found a set of needle nose pliers with a real narrow tip. Still hard, so sprayed it with a bit of wd40, and tried again with the pliers, and the rest is history..
