Default Need help with possible solutions to throttle hand buzz...

I have a 2010 Wide Glide and am loving the bike...except for one functional complaint. My throttle hand gets pretty buzzy after about an hour and a half to two hours of riding, and remains sensitive the next day. I'd really like to solve this because I'd like to start doing a daily commute of 80+ miles on the bike. I bought it to ride it not look at it in the garage.

I have relatively short hands - think boxer not basketball player. I wear a size small-medium leather glove and like them tight as I hate floppy finger ends. So do we think thicker grips? Lowering the handle bar vibration through some method? Just different grips that reduce vibes through their design?

What are people's ideas. Oh I have completely stock bars, and Willie G. grips. I am planning on throwing 6" pull back risers on at some point but my dollars need to be spent to solve this problem first I think.

Thanks in advance,

USMAMULE

kuryakn has their "iso" grips that are supposed to help - somewhere on my seemingly never ending list is to try those and the iso pegs

Hi USMAMule, got a couple of idea's, harley sell some fingerless gloves with a padded palm that help a little, dunno if they have the same with full gloves though, i use them with smaller diam. grips, used to have the kuryakyn iso grips on my sporty, they do help but are bulky for smaller hands and more so with gloves on.
Read about a product that is supposed to cancel the vibes out, they slip into the ends of your bars and have an occilating weight attached, in theory they would help as it works on the same principle as earthquake proofing buildings, havnt tried them though, cant remember what they are called but can dig it up if your interested.
Cheers

Get some polyurethane bushings in your risers/bars. They should do the trick, also get some gloves with the gel pads in the palms.

Description from harley site: Polyurethane Handlebar Riser Bushings

These Handlebar Riser Bushings replace the Original Equipment stacked rubber and zinc washer combination with a long lasting polyurethane bushing and chrome cover. The long-lasting bushing can reduce handlebar vibration.

Here is a link to the poly bushings on the HD site:

Cheers,

Tom

I have the ISO grips w/ the throttle boss and the gloves with the gel pads. Makes for a comfortable ride. They are alittle large in diameter though.

The symptoms you are describing are very serious, no joke. You can have permanent nerve damage, if it continues. I alleviated the problem by wearing gel-pad gloves. I can ride all day with no problems now. H-D makes a good pair of full-finger gloves; other manufacturers make gel-pad gloves too. I also have a Cramp Buster, and I like it.

I can't speak to the grips. The bushings sound like a good idea. Some people say that the gel-pad gloves don't help, but they were the difference between night and day for me. Bottom line: take care of it ASAP.

ZeroFiveFour - Thanks for the bushings Idea... I will definitely check that out..

Hilly13 - will look into gel pad gloves...and will Google to see if I can find what you are talking about with the oscillating weights thingy...in the mean time if you happen to come across it... let me know.

bqualls - Yeah I know it is serious. As I am a network admin - I know all about repetitive motion nerve damage and that's why I am looking for any and all ideas and plan on using some combination of what I find to hopefully eliminate the problem. Thanks for your suggestions and the "seconded motion" regarding the gel gloves as well.

Everyone else: any further ideas would also be appreciated. And as bqualls stated anyone experiencing similar vibration problems resulting in buzz and numbness of the hands (you know that feeling that makes you shake your hand for relief) take it seriously. If you use your hands to make your living, imagine trying to do your job without sensation or permanent buzzing in your fingertips. That is what I am trying to avoid with my request for ideas.

There's your problem! You are wearing gloves which are way too small for you. By the time you have wrapped your hand around the grip the glove puts even more pressure on the entire outside, placing pressure on the entire hand. This strangles the circulation in your hand. Ask me how I know.

Along with a change of gloves, try the rubber Kury throttle aid. These give you many options for changing your grip.

There is no need to start modifying your bike.

My advice to you is to ease up on your throttle grip. While riding my left hand fingers are just hanging under the grip and the right hand I usually only grip with the last two fingers, while the index and middle fingers are just relaxed. that is how I solved my hands going numb while riding.
