Not much to add to this discussion except a "me too." My '09 sometimes has some trouble restarting if the engine is very warm. It always works on the second press of the button. Never tried starting it before the engine light goes out; I'll try that next time.
I wonder if our grandfathers would shake their heads at the stuff we worry and complain about...
Sorry about that Tom i was at work skimming through it real fast. Yea my bike is back in the shop and they are sounding like they are going to replace the crank sensor. I will let you know how it goes.
Well when I dropped it off they said that it was sounding like the crank position sensor then they held on to it for three days and then told me that they could not duplicate it so they were not going to do anything
Mine did it too. I crack my throttle slightly!! While "they" say you should not touch the throttle on a FI engine, this engine seems like the hot restart A/F ratio or IAC park position is incorrect. Cracking the throttle slightly has helped solve my issues on hot restart.
Just for information. The crank and "run" A.F ratios are open loop and are dependant on ambient(IAT) and engine temp. The "run" A/F ratios seem to be correct, but the crank A/F may be too rich for hot restart! There are factors for a slightly cracked throttle in the software, so as long as it is just a "slightly cracked throttle" the ECM can and does compensate.
I have an 09 FXD too. It always starts (knock on wood) on the first try. Sometimes when it's hot, it will take an extra revolution or two to get going. I've started before and after the engine light goes out. If I don't let it go out, sometimes it'll start with a loud exhaust "POP." Sometimes, it starts "slow" almost like it starts by winding up to the idle rpm. Hard to explain, but when it happens, it's noticeable and you'll know what I mean, if you don't already. NOTE: Mine is all stock except for a K&N air filter.

For years and years many Harleys from Sportsters on up have had a related hot starting problem. The symptoms are that you hit the starter and the engine just gives a loud clunk as though its seized and then you hit the starter a second time and its fine. Speculation is that its a timing issue, with the engine stopping on compression as is intuitive and then when you go to start the engine it needs to overcome the compression and it doesn't make it first time but press the starter again and it does.
One fix for this available on after-market bolt-on ignitions was a 'cranking revs' setting. This introduced a one, two or three revolution delay between the engine being turned over and the ignition being fired. This gets the engine spinning before it fires so overcoming the combination of initial high compression and trying to fire at this point.
I wonder if its this that is causing the symptoms that some people here are getting. Maybe the HD ignition has this built in now to avoid the dreaded clunk and so, when hot, the engine is made to turn over a few times before being fired up? It would also explain the pops some people have had because fuel goes in during the cranking and doesn't get burnt, so when it does fire up this extra fuel gets ignited.
I have an 09 Street Bob and it did the same thing when it was new, started right up when it was cold but if I stopped after it was warm it would turn over several times before starting. After I installed the PCV the problem went away. Before I installed the PCV I tried the method of starting it right after I turned the key, not waiting for everything to set-up and that seemed to work too. I never brought it to the dealer for this issues because like I said it went away after installing the PCV. Good luck.
