I have both....
A 2002 heritage with a carb
A 2007 streetglide with FI

If you pressed me to choose... I'll take the carburetor...

Personally I have never had a carbed bike that runs as consistently as the EFI I have now. Too hot won't start, too cold won't run smooth, Playing with the choke... No thanks
i would hate to spend $1,000 now and find out in a couple years I have to rip it all out or sell the bike.

Guess I'm the "old man out". I like the FI, electric start and springs in the rear end. Too many years messing around and now its more riding time. Not saying a carbed bike can't run good but I guess my days of max speed are over and I'm happy with my bikes with just a few mods .

You no longer have emission inspections? I haven't lived there for 18 years.

You must not have rode a bike when you lived there. I left in 95 and at that time bikes were not inspected.

What can i say, I am old...lol I know ID didn't require bikes to be inspected, here in VA they require bikes to be inspected, but just for "safety" well that and revenue....

They still have emission inspection though don't they? I do remember going through vehicle inspections when I lived there.

These are valid points. I have even seen "spot" vehicle inspection trailers on the roadside. California especially is so desperate for revenues to keep up their ridiculous over-spending programs that I'm sure we'll be seeing more of these traps and other more imaginative ones as well.

I used to ride an FXRS w/ a built, carbed EVO motor--a wonderful bike. Here in California my rides frequently include changes in elevation of nearly 10,000 feet! And changes in temperatures of 50-60 degrees F sometimes within an hour's drive! While the carbed bike was never troublesome, you did notice the loss of power at altitude and changes in starting and running in varying temps. The EFI has completely eliminated these "problems"; it always starts/performs the same.

When I was shopping for a bike I really was anxious about getting one which had EFI. What if it crapped out in the wilderness areas in which I ride, far from technical help? I have overhauled many carburetors, so feel that I might have a chance, at least, if a carb screwed up, and I could also tune it myself. But what the hell would I do if some black box forgot what it was supposed to do? Install a spare box? Wanting the later bike w/ the big motor and 6-speed, I hesitantly accepted EFI. So far I am very impressed. If it ever craps out I'll have to repair it so that the bike will still meet EPA regulations.

Note: My bike came with a few upgrades that the original owner passed along; one of these is an SE Pro tuner. But I don't have money to blow on dyno-tuning, so would like to find out if there is any way to use it other than with a dyno. Otherwise I may just sell it.
