Personally I have never had a carbed bike that runs as consistently as the EFI I have now. Too hot won't start, too cold won't run smooth, Playing with the choke... No thanks
i would hate to spend $1,000 now and find out in a couple years I have to rip it all out or sell the bike.
Are you kidding? Tx dont even sniff test for cars yet. But in that situation Id do the same thing that someone would have to do thats running a highly tuned efi, lean it down and trailer it to inspection, the only difference is I can do that with a set of allen keys and flatblade + phillips screwdrivers.

You guys that think the swap would cost 1000 of dollars need to spend a little more time on ebay.

CV carb I've already got one but you can get a builder for $20-50 all day
Intake $30-40 dollars for a SE even less for stock
Adapter for tank petcock $40
Petcock $25-40
Only high priced item is the ignition module which is around $500 and I'm willing to bet you can make an aftermarket module work with the stock crank sensor and that more retrofits will be available soon. Because lets face it many people aren't happy with this setup.

Carbs are definantly not for the mechanically challenged! But CVs are so simple and you can rekit one for about $20 They're also a very good carb and with the right mods will hang with a S&S or Mikuni (which is my favorite but much more expensive)

If you went all S&S it would cost a bit more and it'd probably be worth it too. But then again there's plenty of used S&S stuff around too.

I'm doing it, going to start gathering parts until I've got everything then I'll start a thread on the process of it. Then hopefully my bike wont sound like a Massey Ferguson on crack and be faster then one too! lol thanks to everyone for their input.

You can get the Thunderheart ignition for $285.00. This ignition was designed for builders that wanted to use a Twin cam engine in a custom build without all of the electronics. It only requires the crank sensor to function. Hook it up to the crank sensor, positive, ground and coil and your set to go. Mount it under the seat where you would usually mount one of those boxes for the mechanically challenged.

Not that it really matters, but TX has been sniffing cars for 15-20 years. When's the last time you got a car inspected?

It depends on the county. The more populated areas sniff.

Have a Mikuni on my 04 Electraglide, had the option of EFI or carbed when I ordered it. Swithed to the Mikuni with the 95" kit later. Works awsome with the idle control, much more responsive than the CV.

Be sure to keep in touch with a parts list and let me know how it goes. This is definitely in my future. I've had it with this high idling, stupid sounding POS.

Ok, checking into the wiring diagram of the AMM-P3 ignition http://www.amm.haan.de/P3/PDF/p3_inj_diagram.pdf
I can clearly see that although it is a nice unit there's nothing specifically special about it, the much cheaper Thunderheart should do the same duty or any crank sensor driven module for that matter.

I think Altmann pegged it though by using the factory wiring harness. By tapping a switched wire from the harness for power and spliting the coil and crank sensor wires and tying them into the new module. If you did it this way you could easily return the bike to EFI if wanted by reconnecting the wires as they were. This would take care of any resell value concerns.

Only thing I'm really unclear of on the AMM-P3 website they take a wire from the stock coil called a HV Ground, they stick it together with a ground wire from the AMM-p3 and ground both together. BUT in the diagram it says this HV ground can also be wired into a 12v+ Altmann says the wire is a ION sense for the stock EFI module and it carries high voltage and must be ground. Any ideas of what this wire specifically does?

I've also wonder if using a seperate module would throw engine codes. But according to the Altmann with the mod the stock EFI module's only use is for the speedometer.

Altmann's a German firm isn't it ...? Could be all international 'hoo-haw' ... (without having done 'boo' to study the subject besides read your post and look at the Altmann blog) ....
