Default Mounting bags w/ w/o backrest.

So, I was having trouble figuring out how to mount my throw overs and still being able to use my backrest that has the quick-detach set-up. After using the straps and securing it to the shock mount and tag bracket, I wasn't satisfied. I cut the center strap off and still had them attached, but they were starting to get loose and the front was not tight into the bike.

Finally today it hit me. I went to Lowe's and bought eight of the two-inch long strong magnets and the magnet strips with adhesive on one side. I lined four of the magnets up length-wise and then put the magnetic strips over them sticky side down. So, the heavy magnets are held together with the strips. Then I took the bags and used some super-strong adhesive "Goop" to attach the magnets to the outside of the bags so that the magnet strips would be what touches the strut covers. They are softer and shouldn't scratch the strut covers, so that is how they are mounted now. They fit a lot tighter to the bike and I can pop them off, put the backrest on, and stick them to the backrest bracket. Probably not a good security measure, but it makes it more convenient to get them off and on, and still be able to use my backrest. I will see how they hold up and if it was a good idea down the road I guess.

So, that is how I spent my early evening.

Well, I don't think it's going to work. The magnets are strong enough to hold it to the sides, but not strong enough to keep it in place. They slide up and down, so eventually, if I have anything loaded in them, they will fall off. So, back to the drawing board. The purpose of this is to not modify the bike in any way, but mod the bags until they work. I'll keep you updated.

I left the magnets on there, used two small bungies to secure the front and the original nylon strap for the rear. This will hold it in place, but I am still not diggin' it. I want to figure out a way (that doesn't cost much) to attach them, have them fit right, and not use nylon straps around the tag bracket or attached to the shock mounts.

Default why?

Why is it so important to force them in tight? They look like they hang pretty well. I'd get rid of the magnets; seems like they'll just mess up the finish, eventually. Keep it simple.

My throw-overs have only a leather lashing which I attach to the eye of a giant Ty-rap at the bottom of each shock; this isn't really necessary but prevents them from being too easily removed. And like yours, the tail-lights and shocks prevent all fore/aft movement; mine fit very tightly here.

Yeah, I agree, I am going to get rid of the magnets, and just try a different way to strap them on. I guess I'll have to get used to it. I just don't like them not tight into the bike. Ah well, I will have to get over it until I can get some better bags. Thanks.

I like the way the bike looks with out that piece of material over the fender.

I keep thinking I could put a longer bolt through the fender and the strut and bolt them in. Then punch holes in the bags and put them though the extra length bolts and bolt them in. It may need a metal strap of some kind for some added strength and stability.

I know you mentioned not wanting to modding the bike but this is really just removing the stock bolts and replacing them with longer ones and installing them backwards.

I like the thought of that, may have to give that one a try.

well, today I had the most simple idea that actually worked. I just used black zip-ties to attach them to the strut covers. It doesn't look bad now, but will look much better this winter when my strut covers turn black.
