ON! Buddy of mine (no belt guards) was doing about 70mph down the highway when an empty garbage bag came blowing acrosse the lanes. Got sucked in between the belt and sprocket and completely locked the rear wheel up.
He was lucky enough to keep the bike upright as the smoke was rolling off the rear tire.
I want mine off, will look much better for two reasons .
1. getting rid of the gaurds
2. will allow me to switch my 11" Progresives for the 10.5" Burlys.
My toughts are they are installed for three reasons.(in order of importance)
1.Prevents the belt from whipping around if it brakes.
2.Prevent passengers from getting into the belt.
3.Prevents (maybe) road debris from getting in belt/pulley.

Don't remove; dress-up! ! !
Chrome belt guards & sprocket cover with a chrome primary cover, and the lines just flow from the front of the motor on back (pic 3)...I like the look.
Well, Mud, I got up Sunday morning and drilled it with the stepping bit. It worked great! It left some "dingleberries" on the back, but I just real gingerly touched it from the back, and it sliced them right off. Ended up with a real clean hole...
Now I'm thinking I might re-paint the upper belt guard in flat black. I love the look! Thanks for the ideas!
had mine off for awhile cuz tab broke on swingarm. back on now. i had no troubles at all and ride with a passenger alot. the only thing i didnt like was it slung alot of water and sand on to fender.
However, judging from replies in this & past threads, this problem is practically nonexistent. Besides, I don't think the belt guard is there to "guard" the belt.. more likely it's to protect people from the belt.
