Just a heads-up to those with the ignition switch in the fork neck (like my 07 FXDL..).
I used to have my security FOB on the same key ring as my key; no more. After two plus
years of the FOB hanging from the ignition key ring and "banging" against the fork neck, it
broke loose all the "guts" of the FOB (i.e. the magnets inside) and left me stranded on the road. Fortunately, I did have the "pocket card" in my wallet with the instructions on how
to manually override the security system. Now my FOB is carried in my pocket.....
If your bike had factory installed security, there should be a final page to the manual with several scored "cards" that can be removed to place in a wallet, etc. These have the specific instructions for that security system.
I did NOT like the security system. Had it removed. I'm just too old school I guess.
Love the new security system and I always carry the fob in the pocket. Then again, I don't have the iginition on the forks, but I do lock my forks. It is really nice to know that anyone trying to start it won't without my fob!
After the first couple of times riding my bike I didn't like that fob taking a beating from the neck and scuffing up the paint as well, so I just clip it to my belt or put it in a jacket pocket. It can't be that good for the ignition switch, either.

Yeah, it's not like a security system will keep your bike from getting van'd.
I want to get rid of my mine but only authorized HD dealerships can pair a ECU and a TSSM/TSM and my shop lacks the proper computer...
bad design, the fob does cause scuffing to the paint work..
I going to raise this as a warranty issue with the dealer..
However, if they accept it and re spray, how, other than taking the fob off the key ring can it be prevented from happening again ?
Appears it can`t..
Has anyone been down the warranty route, if so, what was the outcome ?
Regards..
i would be really suprised if they would even consider this to be a warranty situation. When i got my bike, the dealer gave me a nice rubber key chain, and they said dont leave it or a fob on the same ring as the key.
Well the FOB is supposed to be separate from the key...... that way if you lose your key or leave it in the bike by accident or whatever it wont start and no one can take it. I keep the FOB on a separate key ring with my car/house keys. The bike key is by itself on one of those rubber dealer key rings.
I have always carried the fob in the watch pocket of my dungarees. The key goes there too, when I am not riding.
For those of you what don't know what is a watch pocket, it's the little pocket over your right hand pocket. People used to carry their pocket watch there, before wrist watches.
