Dad got a new/old bike 1984 low glide and its mint except the tach isnt working. He looked in the book (yeah he got a mint bike with origanal book) but it doesnt say if it has its own fuse or circuit breaker. Maybe even need a new tach but didnt want to go that route till he trouble shot it first. Anyone know. Thanks for your help.
Don't know how much this helps but this is what I see on the wiring diagram.
Its a typical system of a single signal wire taken off the negative side of the coil that goes directly to the tach. (sorry no color available on my diagram) The wire passes through an eight wire connector that handles all the power wires going to the gauges. All I can tell you is it is shown as one of the end wires in the connector. The other end wire is a power feed for the speedometer light
(ie 12 volts).
You should be able to check for a tach signal at the eight wire connector.
That can be done with a dvom if you have one with a tach function. If not you may be able to use a high impeadence test light to watch for a pulse signal.
Eather way if you get a signal the tach is probably bad. If not back check the wire for the open circuit and make sure it has a good ground.
Good Luck.

Reason: add info
make sure all the wiring and connections are good before you condemn the tach. continuity test each wire and if you can get your hands on a wiring diagram it would really help.
