I appreciate the response gr, and when I am ready I will again price all my options, but the last time I did I found the Ohlins and Arnotts prices far exceeded what I could get the Progressives for.
I'm surely not downplaying any of their qualities.
what if a guy wants 11 in shocks so to keep lowered look, i have prog 11 inchers and boy are they rough but i like the look if i could keep the look i would pay what ever for a more comfy ride
Although I plan on doing the Ohlins (forks too) for the time being a did a little experimenting with air shocks. First I tried the Ultima copies (158lb version) because they were cheap ($104) and the chrome looked pretty good. BUT, these soon came off in favour of HD branded (ok Showa) for a couple of reasons. Firstly the lighter ones are way too light IMO unless you weigh 100lbs and ride a Sportster - with 30-40lbs in them it would allow the pipe bracket to drag if there was the slightest dip in a corner and two up it would drag making a right from a dead stop.........not good. Mostly they are too short (12" OAL) AND too soft and I only weigh 185 with gear. 2 up I had nearly 60lbs in them and still the same.
So I went to ebay (link below) for a set of std height touring shocks that turned out to be new take offs even though the listing didn't say so and the shop was good enough to cap them when they removed them so basically $370 worth of shocks for $71 plus shipping and they are brand new. Intitial report says they are much better, I only have 20lbs in them, (could probably reduce that though) they ride equally as nice, (soft yet controlled) dont do anything bad and don't drag anything. The HD ones are 12.75" OAL. You will need to spend about another $50 for the lines, connectors and push adapters but for less than a buck fitty I'd say they are pretty good and you can always add more air 2 up..........gonna try that over the weekend. Oddly it doesnt make a perceptible difference in seat height.
