Default LED fuel guage fitting

Hi all just curious, is the flush mounted fuel cap and Fuel level caps easy to install, do I have to remove the tank or does the LED level guage just un screw and plug in. Thanks.

Been thinking about getting a set too. I think they are a very easy install but I've heard a lot of bad things about the LED gauge not lasting very long. Either going out altogether or losing led's one by one until they are all gone. So I'm holding off a bit.

The gas filler side is a no brainer. I think the gauge side you just twist and/or pull out and disconnect the wire and hook it to the new gauge and reinsert into the tank. I may be oversimplifying a bit but it can't be much harder than that.

It's pretty straight forward.

You don't have to remove the tank, but you will have to disconnect the fuel guage wiring under the left side of the tank and take the connector off to remove the old guage.

Installing the new guage the wiring feeds through the tube inside the tank and comes out underneath. Install and plug in the new connector.

joe: bout how long does it take? I am going to pick mine up at the dealer later today and was curious how long it would take me. Also, does the tank need to be drained and what's an easy way of de-pinning the connector? Thanks

There are instructions in that come with the parts, should take between 30 minutes and an hour tops. The hardest part is getting the pins out of the connector. If you don't plan to reuse or sell the stock fuel guage you can cut the wires and save some aggravation. The kit comes with a new connector to use after the wires are fed through the tank.

This thread explains how to remove the pins from the connector:

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/softa...tch-plugs.html

The tube that the wires are fed through is welded into the gas cap well and the bottom of the tank, so you don't need to drain the fuel.

As said above, pretty easy install. You don't have to drain the tank but taking out the front tank bolt allows you to lift the tank a couple inches which makes it very easy to get to the wiring connector and install the new gauge.

Had my first LED flush mount unit when the bike was new in Nov,08 and it lasted about 3,500 miles before acting up intermittently. Harley replaced it under warranty and the one I have now has operated flawlessly for the past 13K or so miles, operating rain or shine.

It definitely makes it easier to reach the connector if you take out the front gas tank bolt and lift the tank up a bit. The time you save by doing that will more than make up for the time you would have spent trying to get under there to the connector without raising the tank up a bit, in my opinion. I've never had any problem with the LEDs on mine.

My first set only lasted about 5 months. The second set has worked flawlessly for the last 18 months.
