Default rear softail fender on dyna. bargain

i love story808s night train, the rear fender, the blackness, the ape hangers. its my perfect bike. so ive been inspired to build my dyna the same way, kind of.

itll have apes eventually, im workin on the black paint job, (although im goin satin not gloss), and im keepin all the fancy low rider chrome for now, so it aint a copy of story808 but i like to think that it was my inspiration.

first things first, i bought a softail fender from ebay for Ł40 including postage, i got some tough black satin simoniz paint, 6 cans for Ł30, and i bought myself some welding rods, and used my dads welder for the first time in my life.

heres where im up to.

im not test fitting the fender until i have it done n ready to swap over, as i know im going to have to drill the strut hols maybe a few cms this way or that way. but the holes that are there already will be covered so that doesnt matter. i also plan to add a plastic or fibrelass extension instead of the usual half a dyna fender bolted on the front as i dont want to buy another fender or use my old one, and i like the thought of coverin the plastic with a little leather pouch i can keep a rag in for when the gas station runs out of paper towels, or for when i wana check my oil out on the road.

i wanted a completely smooth look as ill be using a chrome billet rear license plate near the bottom rear of the fender with an intergrated tail light in the plate frame, so i cut out some metal and filled in the licence bracket holes and the rear light access hole for a completely smooth fresh start.

now im ready to paint and ive sprayed the inside with some old gloss black i had layin around, and ive done a few coats on the outside with the satin tough paint. well see how it turns out. im hoping itl come out a deep rich dark satin with a slight sheen to it, a little darker yet not as dull as the denim black that harley offers.

if this comes out ok ill be sprayin my tank and front fender in the next couple of weeks.

You used a stick welder??? Did it distort the fender any? Not trying to tell you how to do anything but it's usually best to do any fitting and drilling before painting.

ye i used a stick welder, no distortion, just used some 2.5mm sticks on low power to tack it in, i cut it very precisely so that there were no gaps so the bondo filled the rest.

i know it makes sense to test fit the piece before painting, but i removed the tail light and turn signals to find that the electrical plugs on the end of the turn signal wiring wouldnt go through the nuts that hold them on the struts, so i didnt want to go cutting the wires n have to connect em all up again just to test fit it. i tried removing the pins but it was too tricky and was taking up too much time.

the only thing im gonna need to do is move the seat mounting screw hole back a coupe of inches and drill a couple new holes for the rear strut bolts. the rest is an exact fit

I was about to tell you that isn't a Night Train rear fender ... but, then I looked at story808's bike and he doesn't have a Night Train rear fender either ....

If yours turns out as nice as his, you will be pumped ... good luck with it ....

Yes, storys bike is one awesome machine and was instrumental in my decision in installing the dresser fender on my Low Rider as well. I just don't have your welding skills, so I had to just buy a dresser style fender blank and bolt it on. Keep us posted with pics.

well i did the primer coats and decided to take an evening to remove my fender n electrics n test fit the softail fender. even though holding the fenders next to each other they look like the same width, theyre not. theres about a 15mm gap on each side of the softail fender and the fender struts just wont move far enough in to make contact, the strut bolts also dont even reach the softail fender holes.

so now im gona list the fender on ebay and hopefully make some sort of profit as i got it cheap in the first place, and im on the lookout for a fender blank like the poster above.

where did you get the blank from, is it an exact fit on the lowrider, mines a 2003. is it plastic or steel, and does it extend all the way forward or stop like the softail ones?

any help would be greatly appreciated

Heres the one I used. But its a tad less than 7 inches wide. My bikes a '96 and has a narrower fender than later Dyna's. But I think debrix has wider ones

I saw they had 7.5 and 8 inchers as well. What does your struts measure across. I chose the metal one from debrix, but it did need some serious massaging.

If you don't think you have to have metal, them Sumax makes a composite one I have heard great things about.

Heres a picture of my first mock up with the metal 7 incher.
