I sent email to easybrackets.com, asking how to fix the rattle. I also indictate that I'd be posting my response here. My email was promptly returned by Dave Havens, who requested I call him at their toll-free number.
WHY THE RATTLE?
Dave explained that the rattle results from the need for Easy Bracket fabrication tolerances to be fairly loose to accomodate for variances in the spacing between the mounting points on Harley side rails. If the spacing between side rail mounting points on your bike are dead-on, then your Easy Brackets stand an increased chance of rattling. If the spacing is "loose" or "tight", then the brackets are less likely to rattle.
SOLUTION
Easy Brackets doesn't have a rattle-stopping accessory for sale, nor do they intend to develop one. Dave offered this suggestion: remove one of the two Easy Bracket mounting pegs from each side of the bike and re-install with a chrome washer behind them (he did not specify thickness). This will create an offset between the mounting surfaces of the two pegs, which should cause the bracket to bind against each peg in a way that will reduce or eliminate the rattle. I haven't tried this yet. I'll post my results when I get around to it.
I had the same thing happen when I installed my Boss Bags, it rattled on the right side only. Measured all the clearances on the bike and everything was right on. Put a thin washer in between on the back bolt or which every one is rattling and it should fix it.
I have these brackets on my 06 Dyna Street Bob. I needed to put a spacer under the front mounting bolt in order for the brackets not to rub on my chrome fender rails, this eliminated the rubbing issue but they still rattle, especially when the bags are empty. The brackets are well made and if the rattling does not bother you then I would recommend them, I have learned to live with it. The beauty of them is how easy it is to install/remove them and they lock when on the bike. Be careful mounting the bags to the brackets to allow for movement of the rear shocks and you will need to relocate the rear turn signals, other than that they are a good idea.
Harley had a better idea with the older Dyna Convertible, which came with detachable bags. The bracket mounted on the bag had a hard moulded plastic insert around the hole which eliminated the rattling issue, surely easy brackets can supply something like this to prevent their brackets from rattling.
Unfortunately, the Easy Bracket company does not, at present, intend to solve this problem except by advising the customer to install that shim. Personally, I don't like it. This jiry-rig solution forces the bracket to fit your bike worse, thus tweaking it enough the stop the rattle. I expect this solution will cause the bags to be a little harder to install and remove, though I have no proof of that yet.
czissman... I mentioned in an earlier post my Easy Brackets didn't rattle... Well had my bags off last night... So for grins I measured my mounting bolts... Now I know why mine didn't rattle... I added a washer to the front bolts when I installed them originally.... So my bolts are uneven, from the getgo.. so no vibration.. That's a real crappy way to fix a problem...
They were harder to remove, that's why I moved the locking key arm around to get it right... They go off ok... but, to put them on you really have to have them dead on the bolt slots... bet the uneven bolts cause that....
Whatever works that's one obnoxios noise I can fix. Now where do I need to put the washer to stop that front brake chatter or the constant backfiring every time I even think about slowing down.
Hi, This answer is a bit late I know, but I have just bought leather-saddlebags from Hepco (Germany) with easy-brackets. I mounted the stuff quite easy but the two bags are rattling due to the normal tolerance of the slots in the bolts of the easy-brackets. I think I will fix it witha chrome U-part, which I will stick in additional fixed eyes on each bracket. After mounting the bags, then I stickthisU in the both eyesto spread the two bags outsideand the tolerance is eliminated. Do you have other ideas? Sorry for the bad English, I am Swiss :-).
My EasyBracket on the left side started rattling last weekend for no apparent reason. I was gonna post a question here, but a search on "easy bracket rattle" pulled up this thread.
I agree the fix is cheezy, but at least I know it isn't just me, there is a workaround, and I didn't have to call the vendor!
I had mine installed at dealer, they seemed fine forawhile, rode to streetvibrations last month and thought i threw a rod, only to figure out after pulling over with 12 other riders, that it was the brackets, i also called them and got same canned answere they told me to put a soft 1/32 washer in each side, i told them that would look cheezy reason i bought was they would make bike look better when bags are off there reasponse was (sorry) go figure
