The 583es cams work great. My 88 is still stock but runs and sounds way better. Engine turns over easier when started so thinking the starter should last longer. May up the compression a little in the future. I'm pretty happy with it now.
Just a thought on the guys with or considering the SS585 cams.
I have them in 2 bikes.
One is a ss106 kit in a 2010 wide glide. Pulls fair up to 3,000 but the engine really comes to live at 3 grand up to the limiter, 6,200
The second is a 2005 super glide 113
What I have learned with these cams is good head work is really needed for them to produce good torque. I had stage 4 head work done with these cams Torque starts at 2,000 rpms @107
I must say this build was designed for torque, not hp. It peaks at 5,800 with over 130 foot lbs. and 119 hp.
2 up you have to really be soft on the throttle, the first 2 gears it wants to wheelie and pops it in 3rd for a distance. Sometimes I take off in second gear not realizing it and the only way I know it is in second is the speed when I shift. I do have a baker OD6 transmission and had them raise the gearing in the first 3 gears for less spinning at a launch. it did help some but it still boils the tire on a launch.
Don't think I would use them in a heavy touring bike though. Probably use the ss575
Just a thought.
Installed this cam into my 2013 FXDF. Purchased S&S quickie pushrod kit to complete job. Kit is complete with instructions easy to follow. Recommend to watch YouTube video on doing actual task. Used (purchased) bearing tools from Georges out of CA. Bike has Vance & Hines fuel pac, so tuning is quite easy. First start was effortless, in fact started several times on a row, cams work as advertised. Initial test ride discovered my lowered idle of 900rpm is to low for this set up, kicked idle up to 1000 rpm & this eliminates stalling when rollin up to a stop light. Bike has a definite lope at idle and loud out of the Rinehart kickbacks. Second item notice was rolling hard out of 3rd gear clutch slipped. I have ordered a SE heavy duty clutch spring & Im being assured will cure my torque slip issue. From a install point of view, job is manageable with basic hand tools for normal service work, torque wrench and bearing removal/install jig.
2008 FXDF with HD 103 kit (10:1 cast pistons), RB 2-1 Black Hole pipe (for quiet), 585 E-Z starts and stock heads. The dyno tells the story; and I wouldn't be without E-Z starts again. Put 551 E-Z's in wife's stock 96; nice upgrade and easier starts when hot
