Drain the thing hot. Drain the trans and primary with the MC level so everything will come out. The engine oil drain it with it on the kick stand. Drain it till it stops dripping.
Then put in what the manual says. It hasn't done me wrong yet.
Thanks and i may have over reacted but as you said its done. Everything you stated in your last post is in the manual and i have read that, but my main question was about checking the primary and in my manual there is nothing in the maintence section that says anything regarding bike position for checking the primary. So what i did was place it upright and put in the entire 32oz, but the manual clearly states in the tranny section to put the bike on the jiffy stand for filling and checking, but when doing it this way if i put the whole 32oz in it is over full. So i drained some out and went with what the dipstick says. What harm can be done to the engine, trans and primary if they are slightly over full?
I was doing some PM on my 05 Dyna today and noticed in the owner manual about checking and filling the trans, primary and engine crankcase. It states the bike to be upright or verticle (not leaning on the stand) when checking or filling the primary or trans. When checking the crankcase should be leaning on the side stand. I doubt the 06 would be any different.
I am gettin ready to do my 1st Harley Oil Change. For now, I was going to do crank case only, as I have been told by numerous Harley owners, that they only change Tranny and Primary fluid every 5000 miles, and I am at the 2500 mile mark.
Also, I had considered going to a full synthetic, but have read here, that it tends to leak a bit more than dead dinosaur does. I don't have any real leaks, but on the primary side, near the tranny input, I do get a bit of "wicking". Any thoughts?
Mhbetzer-I am not sure what they did different in 06 as compared to 05, but my manual sats to check on the stand for engine and trans but no info for the primary.
New2harley- what year bike do you have, i have an 06 fxdbi and at my first service went with the harley syn3 and did not like it, i have switched to amsoil 20/50 in the engine and primary and amsoil 75/90 in the trans. I am happy and no leaking at all, i think most people on here are using some form of synthetic. Welcome to the harley world, there a great machine and theres no going back now.
It's a 93 FLH. The salesman told me to change oil every 2000-2500 miles, and to use HD 20W-50. Didn't say a thing about the primary drive or transmission tho.
One co worker of mine is very educated when it comes to bikes, and he uses Mobil One synthetic in all three holes. Another co-worker is an Amsoil dealer, and told me that Amsoil has oils specifically geared to the different requirements of the crankcase, primary, and tranny. The possiblities of what can be used, and where is a bit overwhelming, so I want to make sure I am doing things right.
I think you cant go wrong with mobil 1 or amsoil but i would defenatley put a gear oil in the trans and i would most definatley not put hd synthetic in the dealer will push this stuff but dont do it. Check some of the past oil threads there is lots of good info here.
