If you have the Fin collection Derby cover on your bike it uses a special cardboard gasket not the stock rubber one ....

Thanks for all the replies, I do own the service manual, it says to inspect the o-rings, and change the Primary Seal. I bought the kit the 3 o-rings are the same size, They offered me the $8 pancake gasket, it didn't look right to me so I will just pull the derby cover off and see whats under there, if I need to go back and get the pancake gasket I will, if not I will use the one in the kit. I'm still confused on which oil to put in the tranny, I almost bought mobil1 75w145 gear oil but it said light truck on it so can someone elaborate on what weight would be best for oklahoma weather, is has been 103-5 here lately with a heat index of 110 and the lows are around 75, of coarse in the winter it gets pretty cold too below freezing. I have read many many posts on oil and I haven't been able to find what I need I am not interested in Redline or Amsoil because they are hard to find in my area, please if your gonna reply don't tell me to look at the stickys in the oil section, if thats your answer then please keep your reply to yourself. thanks

I found this link in another thread http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...ollection.aspx

Does Harley recommend a GL-5 rated lubricant in the transmission?
Is there brass and copper or any other "yellow metals" in the Transmission
I know this all sounds like I am completely clueless but I'm new to this and just looking to learn a thing or two, and keep the un-necessary repairs to a minimum.

Sounds like you don't want to do the due diligence yourself, but would rather someone else did it for you. Everyone including your Harley dealer can make recommendations on oil choice. Your own research will help you make the right choice for your own bike. Good luck w/ that.

Default reply to lo-rider

Thats right Lo-rider, I did post 3 reply's in a row, and I was looking for input from someone who is knowledgable. I posted 3 times because I was doing my oil change today and wanted a reply as soon as I could get one, but my post kept getting pushed down the que by chit chat from people just killing time, don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with the chit chat, but as you can see I still didn't get but one reply on the gear oil. Oh and I did do my own DD, I bought a manual before even making the thread, I looked over countless oil threads, the manual said to use SYN3, or formula+, but I was leary of using those because HD is a business and their interests are not necessarily aligned with mine. Lots of people use REDline with Shockproof and lots use amsoil both not in my area and I don't have time to wait on a delivery. I was hoping someone with some knowledge in transmissions would reply with an answer of weather GL-5 is bad for the tranny over time, or tell me that there is no brass or copper or yellow metals in the tranny. SO anyways next time you want to be a turd please keep it too yourself I had been looking for the answers but couldn't find them so I asked, thats what forums are supposed to be for, helping each other out not tearing each other down. Anyways one again I am still looking for an answer is there any "yellow metals in HD transmissions??? I am leaning toward buying Mobil 1 gear oil for the tranny because I have heard it quiets things down, but I dont want to use it if over time its gonna break my tranny down. Thanks you to all those who replied with helpful information.

PS, I changed the engine and primary oil, all went well, I replaced the o-rings but the gasket looked like the new one so I reused it, I didn't do the tranny oil cuz I am still wondering which would be the best to use.

You won't get a answer on which is the "best" tranny oil to use.
You will get opinions on what other people think is best.

With that said, I am using Mobil 1 75W-90 Gear Oil
Check this thread out, and you'll get a pretty good idea what most people are using. As you can see there are lots of options.

Harleys use a constant mesh sequential shift transmission that doesn't have synchronizers. As far as any other 'yeller' metals in the tranny? I have no idea and I'm not gonna tear it down to look.

Tests have shown that GL-5 rated gear lubes mostly just discolor yellow metals any way.

I put Mobil 1 75W-90 in my transmission and I'm not going to lose a second's sleep over it. It is, afterall, MT-1 rated. So it should be fine. I've also heard of people running it for tens of thousands of miles in Harley transmissions with no issues.

IMO, Exxon Mobil isn't recommending their Mobil 1 GL-5 gear lube for transmissions probably because they don't want to test it in the hundreds of transmissions out there. And most of them have synchronizers in them. So yeah, the GL-5 additives WILL corrode them -- In theory.

But I can't think of any brass, copper or brass in a Harley tranny. I think Buell had the stator in there. I think. And that would be full of yellow metals.

There's a lot of companies out there recommending their 75W-90 synthetic, GL-5 rated gear oils for Harley transmissions. I suspect that Exxon/Mobil just hasn't gotten around to testing it specifically on Harley trannies yet.

They may never.

It took the MoCo, what? Three centuries to discover synthetic oil?
