I was putting Amsoil 75W90 Severe Gear in the tranny when I changed it but this last time when I had the dealer put a clutch cable on they put Bel-Ray 85W-140 Hypoid Gear Oil in it and I'll be damned but it seems to shift a little smoother and seems a little quieter. Of course this could be me just happy to have my bike back after a damn week but still...
I looked it up on Bel Ray's site and that is what they recommend for the Harley transmission. http://www.olyslager-lubricants.nl/B...H53pu55klDU%3d

Mobil's GL-5 synthetic gear lube is almost certainly formulated in a similar fashion to those recommended for Harley trannies. They will almost certainly have the same buffers, inhibitors and metal deactivators which do not let the high sulfur content present in GL-5 gear lubes (EP package) attack copper alloys.

But here's the rub -- GL-5 gear lubes don't play well with the synchronizers present in virtually every automotive standard transmission on the market. Mobil 1's GL-5 has VIs in it that allow it to work with most limited slip differentials and that is NOT what you want in a tranny with synchronizers.

So, sure as hell, if Mobil puts, "Safe For Harley Davidson Sequential Shift Transmissions That Are Separate From The Engine And Primary Case And Don't Have Synchronizers Or The Stator In Them" somebody will get confused after the first three or four words and dump it where it isn't supposed to go. All they'll see is the word 'transmission'.

So little Johnny will dump some in his Honda Civic manual transmission and about the third time little Johnny tries to grab 2nd Gear at 6,000 RPM, the synchronizers will go on strike and Little Johnny will grenade his tranny.

So Mobil is just gonna let sleeping dogs lie.
