Found an excellent Sears red jack on C/L for $60 and did stage II mod (see photos @ Vic's [stage I] thread). These mods make the unit easier, maybe safer, to use on our Harley's. Agree that descent control could not be improved. And it easily (just) slides under my stock height FXDC.
Ironically, a friend gave me an HF unit (w/ adapter) a few days later! Its' bottle jack needs service, so I haven't tried it, but it looks to be even taller than the Sears, but w/ a more stable base, due to the wide-profile caster mounts. The Sears exudes better quality, and seems to have a better inherent design, but the HF is WAY more heavily built in many areas, and appears to be plenty wide enough for our big bikes, in its' stock configuration.
Had I money to blow, some of it would have gone towards a Pit-bull or JS, because they're really that much better--like buying a Snap-on tool instead of a Sears. But for most of us either the Sears or HF jacks is adequate.
I've had my eye on that HF lift... (btw, not my bike)
I've also been eyeing HF aluminum version that seems to be designed a bit differently... for $150.00USD
There's also this one that looks like it may be quite useful with a maximum lift of 30", and 1500lbs. capacity... for $160.00USD (you could lift your mother-in-law up to the table with it... LMAO!)
