Been there, done that too many times because of totally oblivious drivers pulling out in front of me, people swerving, etc... Not that I try to, but I've found more control over locking the rear wheel up and allowing "some" slide from which I can easily recover. Again, not something I do intentionally or often, but I locked the front once - and I do mean ONCE. Dropped the bike like you. If it weren't for the crash guard, I and the bike would have been in bad shape. As it was, I simply pushed it out of the intersection VERY embarrassed.
I'm glad it wasn't too serious for you, and I hope you heal up very quickly. The fact that you're still around to type a post is a blessing in itself.
Really tough situation to be in; brake hard or gun it. I'm glad to hear that you're okay.
I was in that situation once and I took decided to brake hard and some dumb young girl hit my rear tire and the bike went one way and I flew through the intersection, landed on the otherside one my feet running down the street. All I got was a sprained knee. My friends I was riding with said it looked like I was doing the long jump flying through the air. The bike was smacked by a car in the intersection as i went flying over the car.
Apparently the good Lord decided it wasn't my time and let me continue to ride.
You know, that new Street Glide with ABS I rode the other day was kind of a revelation to me of how great brakes can be. I was just giving the front lever a little squeeze at first, but as soon as I had the feel,I clamped it pretty hard just stopping for an intersection, hard enough to feel the ABS stutter do its thing. I think in a real panic stop like you were in this would be the difference between going down and not. My next Hog is gonna have ABS.
sorry to hear man.. hope everything works out for ya get that wrist healed up so you can shine the new stuff on the bike this winter and get it ready for some late winter early spring riding
**** happens. Glad you're basically ok, hope your scoot is too. Go through the accident in your head and see if you can find things you could do differently next time that might have made a difference.
Heal up quickly and in the meanwhile think of all the mods you will do on the bike. Its a sobering thought for all of us out there...those damn lights and the cars that wanna jump the light. We're constantly thinking of who or what will do us harm. Makes me remember what my MSF instructor said "treat everyone on the road like your enemies...always be on the lookout for yourself 'cause aint no one looking out for you (most of the time)"
