Beautiful Saturday for riding, out all day and was heading over to buddies to swap some parts on my bike. Stop light changed really fast and I had 2 choices, throttle up and blast through or lock 'em up hard-n-fast. Decided to brake hard, got a little bit of the death wobble in the front and lost control. Went down pretty hard; exhaust side.
I slid to a stop right on the line for my lane and the bike slid about another 30ft. into the intersection. Knock the hell outta me; broken left wrist; broken right index finger; 1 broken rib; and lots of road rash. I haven't seen my bike yet, but its at the dealership (auth repair shop for my ins.) for the estimate now. Great crew there, the girls in the service have all called to check on me so far and will let me know about the bike. Gonna see if I can get one of them to snap me a few pics, will post them when I can. Surgery for finger & wrist is tomorrow.
Of course GF, Mom, & all the women are saying sell the bike before it kills me. Of course I can't I just got it last March; still got more mods to do . So it looks like I'll miss whats left of this riding season; the bike will be fixed before I am healed up completely.
Glad it wasn't worse! I did that once at a stop light, but thankfully I didn't go down. Just scared the crap out of me. Ever since then, I get nervous through stop lights, slow way down, but usually gun it if it changes.
Glad your alive , i guess you had no choice if the light had changed too fast then i would report the light as a malfunction , or you were speeding enough so you could not slow down though the caution light and make it though before the red , remember that same light for next time and RIDE SAFE !!
Sorry. I've almost been there a few times. You only have to be out of a dead straight line 1 mm it seems to put the bike out of control. I saw a guy on a big rice burner lock up at an intersection once...tire smoke was forming a cloud and he came to a stop at the pedestrian line. It was a thing of beauty....he looked like a statue during the whole thing....arms, legs...everything perfectly symetrical and frozen into place. When it was over he wasn't even rattled....
I could never do that in a million years of riding....he must have been a racer to be that good.
+1 on hoping you learned something. Watch the lights way in advance. Plan them out and prepare. If you're unsure, slow down a bit and wait for the red. Or pick it up a bit so you go through the green. Going through a late yellow or red isn't safe.
I learned my lesson recently too. I was coming home from a late movie with my wife in the city. I was thinking about the ending of the movie (Inception) and then noticed I had 2/1000ths of a second to decide if I was going to gun it or stop quick at a red light intersection. I decided to stop. I got a bit squirrly with her on the back but was in complete control. She didn't really notice I was nervous. My lesson, pay attention and plan it out so I don't have to make a touch decision so quickly.
Glad you'e ok, bike can be fixed. Remember that light and just slow down in advance so you don't have a last second choice, OR gun the Hell out of it. Stay safe and wear some protective gear, helps with the road rash.
Glad you're okay - better than going through and getting hit by someone jumping a light.
Not the same but similar, I learned my lesson about cars ahead of me when the light turns yellow - don't trust them! My second week of riding I had someone in front of me speed up and then decide to stop short in front of me. I was going to make it with them if they went (they had plenty of time), but wound up swerving around them to a stop like I learned in my MSF course. (best $250 ever!)
It was cool because I was proud I handled it like a reflex that I didn't even have to think through, but sad because the two girls in the car didn't even notice what had happened when I skidded up to the passenger window. (another lesson there: cagers can be oblivious) Besides almost staining my jeans, I didn't realize I wasn't in first when the light turned green and stalled a couple of times lol. I felt real slick then...
