If it has the stock seat you will want a better one, or at least send it out for more padding or gel. Other than that I had a Sundowner seat on a Street Bob and you could ride it all day long. The stock seat 50 miles later and your butt was crying.

Buy it and then try it. At the very worse you will ride that sporty a few more times and one day you will jump on that dyna and say good bye sporty! It's been great! Smile and wave!!!

My buddy went to go look at a bike a couple of weeks ago. It was a nice day, so I said I would ride along. 520 miles later and everything was fine. In other words, my FXDWG is plenty comfy for a long ride. Did NJ to OBX and back earlier this year. I do have 'stirrups' on mine, which I think help a lot. I do want to change the seat though. It's comfortable, but the 'step' pushes against my lower back. Don't want a solo (g/f would be PISSED!), so I'll probably go w/ something like a stripper.

Just make sure that SG is in decent shape before you buy it. No maint and no use is not good. If you can ride a sporty you can ride a SG. Harleys are probably the easiest motorcycle to ride.

My Low Rider has done more 300-500 miles days than I could ever remember, and almost always with a passenger. A Superglide is a fine bike for long rides.

thanks for all the info everyone
BUT
I drove over there today to ask him about it and he's in the garage doing stuff to it talking about putting it back on the road and starting to ride regular again in the spring LOL
oh well was a nice thought for a while

waiting till the spring time is better for me anyway gives me time to get some more cash together and be sure I get exactly what I want

They are excellent for long rides. They can easily be kitted out for anything you want - windshield, bags etc if that's what your into (I'm not but whatever) - and can quickly convert back to something you want to ride for fun around town. (I think a lot of people miss the dyna convertible for that very reason) The nice thing about them is that they are very stable for the hiway rides but they are still nimble enough to have fun on if you've chosen the curvey route to your destination. Much better suspension for cornering etc than a softail and lighter and less cumbersome for daily rides than a decker - it's pretty much the best all-around bike the moco makes.

I would have to agree with the previous comments, its a great bike...dont worry about it being too big either. I just bought my first HD this June and its the 96" low rider, power is there for you whenever you need it and you get used to the weight, plus by your description your not a small guy either, so buy the bike and enjoy it!

+1...IMO the Dyna is the Mother of all Harleys!

Did a 2.240 miles 9-days tour in the French Alps two weeks ago in this set-up; last leg was about 630 (higway) miles in 15 hours without any problems:

It took me less then an hour to transform the bike back into this:
