Smile Do I need to re-map?

Hey guys I have an 08 Street bob that I just installed a new set of Vance and Hines big shots on, figured I'd have to have my local dealer re-map the ecm, but riding it with the stock air cleaner about 80 miles yesterday I found the power was smooth throughout with no popping, I figured I'd check the plugs after a bit more riding or should I upgrade the intake and have it mapped anyways ?

More air in / more air out. Add fuel to compensate.

You only did part of the equation.

There is a lot of debate on this....I have read that if you change the pipes the ecm will remap itself and nothing else is needed. After a few miles you can change the ac and again the ecm will remap itself and nothing else is needed. Re mapping the ecm, adding a power commander or fuel pack or whatever will allow the bike to run richer and therefore run cooler. If your bike is stock I would change the ac next and run it to see how it goes. The ecm upgrade if needed can be performed later at which time you should have the bike dynoed. If you do go this route and get the bike dynoed make sure that they do both cylinders as some of these guys only do one cylinder and both cylinders are not the same.....

I think you meant "do both cylinders independantly".

Both cylinders always get mapped, but the problem is that each has slightly different needs and should be mapped seperately. Many don't do that.

Like mentioned, you have only done a partial upgrade. I was able to ride my bike with just doing the pipes too. It sounded great and like you said, no popping, etc, etc, but no performance enhancement either. Putting on a decent air cleaner and hopefully a tuner instead of stage 1 re-map will not only make the bike run a bit cooler, it will perform better (more HP).

If you do end up getting a new breather you should do the ECM download. However remember, that the ECM download done at HD dealers is very general.. meaning its basically the same for all bikes. If you can swing it you may want to get it dyno'd and tuned especially for your bike, rather than the general stage 1 download.

Thanks a bunch guys, I understand the whole equation from re-jetting carbs on my quads etc, I'm not sure the route Im going to take was just looking for a better sound. in all seriousness I feel the bikes 96" pulls my 190lbs around great, stock was just way to quiet.

I had the same questions when I put my cycle shack slip ons on but when I did, I said screw it and rode the hell out of it. 4000 miles later and the plugs look outstanding. Not a single problem. The cycle shacks blued after last weekend when me and the wif went on a 600 mile ride but that is due to the bike running lean from the factory. I am gonna put on the XiED's to take care of the high temps but other than that, i love it.

Oh, by the way. I chopped up the stock pipes and put them back on so the blued cycle shacks done stare at me. I wish I would have done that earlier. It would have saved me $170.

This next fact was true with the new pipes or old ones:

but that is due to the bike running lean from the factory.
All the more reason to flash the ECM or add the XIED's.
Many don't see a need with "just pipes",... but if it's lean from the factory, the pipes will lean it more!

Give your baby some fuel, she'll reward you with endless hours of pleasure!
