Is the friction adjustment the only way to get a smooth control over the throttle? The grip on my FSDB feels like its on ball bearings and find it hard to get smooth power control. Around town at low throttle with a combination of the rigid mounted handlebars, engine vibration and bumpy road I always end up with a jerky ride working the crap out of the compensator. There's a fine line in adjusting the friction damper tight enough to get enough drag on the grip and getting it so tight that the throttle won't return. How does Harley put damping into the fly-by-wire throttles?
I have the same problem sometimes--especially right after I lube up the throttle cables and the grip action is "silky smooth" (and twitchy) for the next few weeks thereafter. I've experimented with the friction lock but don't particularly care to use that unless I'm using it for a "cruise control" on the highway. If I'm going over a bunch of bumps and the throttle is twitching around, bracing my hand by putting my thumb on top or otherwise on the switch housing works for me.
Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only person to notice this. I hate the lack of weight or whatever you want to call it on my WG. I've resorted to using the turnwheel adjuster but it is a poor solution to the problem. I'm now considering a way to install an additional spring attached to the piviot that is exposed on the front of the throttle body but haven't figured out just how to do it yet. One thing I did do was wipe the inside of the handgrip with heavy grease where it rides over the handlebar and it helped a little but not enough to fix the issue. If someone has a better idea let us know.
can the throttle be too smooth, mine has a ball bearing in the end to make it smoother
lol, good point, I agree. I guess it's more about lack of return spring tension and, in my case, I rely on the grit and and friction in my cables to help dampen out the twitches (rather than the throttle lock). So silky smooth, as nice as it feels, is a double edged sword for me when I find myself jerking forward and back while cruising the bumps.
Sometimes I resort to shifting gears, and kind of lugging it around, makes the throttle much less responsive. Like going 25 in third instead of 2nd, plus it makes the "noise ****'s" happier.
