One question: Why? As in why would you need something like that?

I'm assuming you are referring to something like the GIPro ATRE type gear indicators used on sport and sport/touring bikes? I think most Harley riders shift/ride based on the "feel" of the machine rather than some type of gear indicator. Harley does offer mini tachometers with built in shift indicator lights for those that want that added feature.

Personally, I like the simplicity of my Fat Bob and don't miss all the electronic gadgetry of my former Gold Wings, and my last two sport tourers, a Kawasaki Concours 1400 and Honda ST1300.

I'd kinda like an indicator too. I often come to a stop with the bike in second instead of first and get a rude awakening when trying to take off in second. I know it's just my bad technique when down shifting, but I can't seem to train myself to stop it.

So, you think looking down at a light to see what gear your in at that stoplight would be easier?

When you stop at a light or stop sigh, just get in the habit of always shifting all the way down to first. That's the easiest gear of all to find.

I think they would be useful. My Street Bob had a light that told you when you were in sixth. But sometimes between the road noise/exhaust sounds you forget and can't feel what gear your are in. Especially 3-5. The best ones I have seen have a little LCD cube that lights up with the number.
