Around 5:30 pm tonight I was riding to dinner w/the girl friend on the back, about 40 mph on rt 202 just past ramapo college (NJ)coming back from bear mountain, when some movement caught the corner of my eye. I look to the right and a deer is running through some trees off to my right about 10 feet away from me at the same speed. then it darts towards me and its head was less than an arms length away and (I can see clearly that it was a six pointer) his head was parallel with my torso, his hooves slipped on the pavement and slid just behind my rear wheel. My girlfriend was looking at the houses on the other side of the street and didnt see him until the deer was falling, so she didn't have a chance to panic. I'm glad she didn't panic. . . I wasn't sure if i wanted to accelerate as soon as i saw it or break. I was afraid if i gassed it he would jump in front of me and if I jammed the break and he jumped in front of me I would stop in time. I swerved to the left almost into on comming traffic, which i could see that no cars were comming and narrowly missed the deer. It all happed w/in about 3 seconds. The thing that worrys me the most is what if I couldn't swerve left because a car was comming and my hesitation caused us to crash i would feel horrible because the g/friend was on the back. Break or gas? Did I make the right decision? worse yet we just passed a motorcyle accident up the road about 2 miles before this happened and someone was getting loaded into an ambulance. Scary what can happen in just few seconds.[&o]
You did great. You made it alive and uninjuried. (oh a 9mm might not stop a raging deer until it's too late try a 45 or 44mag)LOL
many blessings and thankful you two made it out ok.
Glad to hear you're ok, wouldn't like to see another cobalt bob go down. Any time I see a deer, I slow way down and repeatedly blast the horn. Even bucks are in groups this time of year and who knows if another one is thirty yards ahead getting ready to cross, or on the other side of the road and wanting to come over. You can't predict what the heck they're going to do. Maybe it's all just a guess anyway.
TB...dude..this really hits close to home. I'm absolutely terrified of these damn things. Quite honestly, it's really the one thing that keeps me wondering if I should even be riding. I'm really not afraid of cars because I tend to ride in areas that are really light with traffic. But with that, the problem I have is that areas that are light with traffic tend to be heavy with deer.
There isn't a moment when I'm riding that I'm not thinking about how terrible it will feel if one of those f*cking things runs out at me. There is no right way to handle that situation. Consider yourself very lucky. The only suggestion I can give you is to try to ride in areas that don't have as many deer. Unfortunately, the roads that we (harley riders) typically like the most are the roads that have lots of deer. I was just on Pleasant Run road in the Neshanic/South Branch area a couple weeks ago, and a big buck came out in front of me. One of the biggest misconceptions out there...that I hear all the time...is that you should only be worried about deer at night. I've seen deer at all times of the day...and I had a riding buddy hit one a couple years ago while we were riding out to New Hope, PA...and you guessed it..it was 11 am. Fortunately, he only grazed it, and didn't even go down. But it sure shook him up....and it shook me up as well. There's nothing more horrifying (in my opinion) than being out for a nice little ride..sitting back and relaxing..enjoying the scenery, and one of those bastards starts darting out in front of you. It really makes me wonder why I ever get on a bike without full leathers and a full face!
There are a couple videos out there...here's a few:
