Am using the highest octane we have here in California, 92 I believe. They put in alot of additives here too, but I haven't heard of anyone else having an issue. What I should do is go to the local airport and load up with airline fuel (or even go to the marina where I think the gas is not subject to all the environmental controls) and try that.
Hey Bevis. Checked my post office box yesterday and they have not yet arrived. Will stop by again tomorrow or Monday and hopefully they will be there.
Well it's raining in sunny SoCal today and is supposed to continue tomorrow. We actually enjoy the rain here since we get so little of it. Spending the day in the garage ripping the starter out of my old KZ1000. Lots to come apart to get to it.
Installed the DYN OiEDs today. Thanks BevisRules! Raining here in SoCal so will be a while before I get the scooter out on the road. Did get the expected engine check light on at idle which I was hoping wouldn't happen. If the OiEDs solve my pinging problem, can live with the little yellow light on.
Update - Took the scoot out for a long ride yesterday after installing the OiEDs. Very little if any difference in the pinging I'm experiencing. Will leave them on for a few more rides, check the plugs to ensure I'm not getting any carbon buildup, and see what happens.
Grumpy,
On my '06 LR got a stage 1 download, Zippers A/C and Rush slip ons out of the chute from the dealer, well, actually dealer put SE A/C on it and I switched to the Zippers A/C when I put on the Mud modified cover. That said, never really had any pinging problems but decided to add the OIEDs just to be safe. Bike runs better with them, throttle response improved and decel pop decreased. Can't say I got any more ponies from it though. Been running great for past 10k miles. Only issue is CE light will come on if I idle for more than about 30 seconds, it goes off once I start riding again. I recommend them so long as you're not looking for more ponies.
now THAT is bizarre... have you ever tried looking into it?
I would double check the condition of your plugs, plug wire connections and coil connections. I'm not absolutely sure about the '06, but later bikes utilize "ion-sensing" for the anti-knock timing-retard system... which means it's measuring the resistance of the spark gap on the plug, when it's not firing. If you have a bad/weak component in that spark deliver system, the system may be reading something it sees as completely bogus, and disable the anti-knock system.
Couple with that, maybe a crank sensor starting to go... or even as Odd_child mentioned... something mechanical. If you are getting pinging with 92 octane... increasing your octane is not going to help.
Check all the sensors in your bike... IAT (inlet air temperature), MAP (manifold absolute pressure), ET (engine temperature) and the connections to them... is your bike throwing diagnostic trouble codes? (DTC)... if the ECM is reading something out of normal from the other sensors, it could modify timing and give you your symptoms. Give the bike's electrical connections and general 'wire health' a good look.... that's where I would go next.
I'm not too surprised that the Ieds made no difference. They only effect closed-loop working, which is low throttle opening and low revs. When you are accelerating they do nothing, which is when you get pinging.
Did you check if the bike was throwing any codes (apart from the Ied-related ones)?
