I'm in the process of stripping my tank and fenders for a new paintjob. Everything will be gloss black with new decals. So what type of paint should I get? I've done a little painting in the past with some 2 part paint but I'm not sure what type it was. Since I can't get laquer paint anymore what is a good choice for someone w/o professional equipment? Also, where should I get the paint?
Wish my bike was a $15k machine...but no way it would get that. My dad has a paint booth that I can use for small parts and stuff--I inherited a gun so I'm going to give it a shot (literally!)
If my bike was brand new....then yeah, I'd send em out. But not at this stage in the game with 70 thousand miles on the clock.
At the shop where I work the painters are using ppg water based paint. What seems to be nice about this stuff is that you can spray it on --make a mistake--add stripes--change color or whatever to get just the look you want. When it's just the way you want it then you clearcoat the whole thing. Once clearcoated your done. Your primers and the clearcoat if I'm correct are epoxy based. Don't know if this helps but I thought this might be something to look into.
not a $15 paint job and not a $15000 bike but somewhere in between. I say give it a shot and do it yourself. its not that hard. some guys on here have done awesome paint job on there bikes. i used a single stage urethane with a clear on top. got all the paint from kustomshop.com.
I like to shoot PPG paints i think they are very forgiving... but you can get awesome results with rattle can
I'll agree on using PPG paints, they have a series called shopline which wouldnt be a bad route to go starting out. Stay away from anything water-base because they can be very difficult to use without the right equipment. Keep in mind even though you might luck up and get decent results with spray paint or something but no matter how good it looks its still cheap *** spraypaint in the end. This tank was shot using all ppg products
Wow guys, that's some awesome painting. I'll go find some PPG shopline paint and use that. 952dave your paint job is really impressive, thanks for giving me some inspiration. I'm just going single color with stock HD tank decals. But I'll post some pictures when I'm done.
