Default oil leak

been a long time since i've posted anything so bear with me if this is the wrong place. i have a 98 lowrider and it has just started leaking oil out of the plug that goes to the stator (i think thats what its called), its the plug by the oil filter with two wires running inside. can anyone tell me what is causing this or what i need to do to fix it? is this oil from the primary or crankcase. this is my first harley, had it about 3 years, put little over 27,000 miles on it since buying it, and it is just alittle shy of having 51,000 miles on it. i do all the work on it. i know thats the problem, lol. any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is pretty much just a rubber plug with wires going through it. You might have to take the primary apart and pull the wires through, clean everything up really good and maybe use some RTV on it when you assemble it. You might even be able to get the rubber, not sure if its molded around the wires or not.

It is made on the wires and doesn't come apart.I replaced the stator on mine a month ago.

It is primary oil and the standard repair is the silicone (RTV) repair. A good degreaser and leaves a clean surface is brake cleaner, don't go crazy spraying it.

Default oil leak

thanks for the help. i replaced my stator about 2 years ago, guess i got lucky for awhile. will i have to silicone from the inside or can i get to it from the outside without having to pull off my primary cover. i have just about wore that gasket out. harley shops here want $31 to $35 for the primary, $5 for the one where the shifter used to be, and i forgot to price the round derby cover gasket. don't mean to sound cheap but i just don't have the money right now.

To pull the primary why are you removing the derby cover? You can add primary oil thru the inspection cover ( where the shifter used to be), unless you don't know the amount of oil in ounces. A good service manual could be helpful in the amount of oil. For example, the primaries in both of my bikes take 26 ozs. One less gasket to buy.

Default derby

To tell you the truth, I think its easier to fill the primary through the derby cover. I put a rubber hose on the end of a small funnel and give it a little squeeze to fit between the clutch and the housing. I only mentioned the derby cover gasket because it the only one I haven't priced. I bought the bike in Feb. 2008 and have put almost 30,000 miles on it. I have probably taken my primary cover off 15 or 20 times since I bought it and I haven't replaced either one of the three gaskets yet. I have a factory manual for it, but sometimes it doesn't go quite enough into detail or the pictures of things will be just a little bit different than mine. I used black RTV gasket sealer on the plug and stopped the leak. Now I have another problem, lol, the carb is dumping fuel out the over flow tube when its running. I have taken it off and apart twice now, not finding anything wrong either time. So I'm fixing to read my manual so more trying to get this figured out. Seems like its one thing after another for me right now.
