Default Oil Leak

Update 04/21/2011
Well, still drivining with the famos strator oil leak. After 5.000 leaking Kilometers it was time for a oil change at the primary. Amazing i've lost just 100ml out of 975ml. Tought it might be worser than that.
Last time i've had RevTech, this time i used the regular Harley Primary and Transmission Oil and it seems to leak a bit less.
The Dealer over here (Germany) charges $ 500,-- for a new Strator and 3 Workinghours. Way to much for that little oil, soon as I have time i'll give Brake Celaner and Silikone a try.

Hi,

since a couple of day's i own a oil well. To bad it's on my Harley.
Seems that a transmitter is leaking. Any idea how to fix it?

You could try the "top kill" method or pumping it full of "heavy mud"!

An easy fix? Since it looks like it coming from the wire out of the alternator, first thing I would do is clean the area very well and be sure you know exactly where the oil is coming from.It could be the inner primary O ring.If it is the alt wire, once cleaned pull the wire out as far as you can make sure it is very clean oil free, use silicone slide wire back in.give it overnight, you might luck out.Only other option is pull primary and do it from the inside.

Yup that's the infamous stator plug oil leak. If you do a search here on the forum for stator plug leak or google it you will find a bunch of posts on how to fix it. As stated above, most use a sealant to fix it.

Default I'll give the sealant a try

Thanks for your responce!

I'll give the selant an try. Also found in Hdtalking this trick:
I had an EVO with this problem and what I found is a small "O" ring that was rather thin that can be stretched a just a bit to fit over the plug and then tuck it in between the plug and the case solved it for me. I used an ice cream stick so I didn't damage the "O" ring to tuck it in. Sure beats taking it apart and no more leak.

A user over here in Germany had the dealer remove the primary and sealed it from inside too for arround $200,--. Sound's reasonable, doesn't it?

The one thing im concerned is that there is a thread about the stator plug oil leak in context with "engine oile in the primary".

Just might work if you can get them over the connector. Make sure to tape the sharp edges on the connector or you'll end up with a cut O-ring and the same problem. Also make sure you use neoprene O-rings since rubber will not hold up to the oil.
And, see if you can, find slightly thicker O-rings too.

Ok, i ordered the sealant.

Is there a special trick for the stator plug or ist it just a strong pull to remove the plug?
Do i need tools to remove?

I think, that plug in the case doesn't come out buddy. It's attached to the stator (I think). You need to follow the wire until you find a plug, if you are going to stretch an o-ring over the plug and push it in around the case ( I think).

Sorry, i was wrong. Of course i meant not the strator plug that is inside the engine, i was writting about opposite side(outside) plug (connector).
Do you have any idea about the diameter of that plug. I googled but haven't found anything.

I fixed the same leak on my 1999 ultra. You have to replace the stator. That means pulling the inner primary. But here's the deal. If you look at a newer ones they route the wires different. They are routed up instead of down. I ran mine up the frame and tide them in behind the bracket that goes between the frame tubes. HD tech told me that was a recall they had one time. Because the wires go down on yours the oil follows them. Running them up oil wants to stay put, no where to run. I tried just rerouting the wires, but didn't work. Still had to change out the stator. Plug is built right into the stator wires. You'll find the rest of the wire tide to a bracket under your right frame rail. Just take them loose there and reroute them. You'll have plenty of wire. If your lucky maybe that's all it will take. But it didn't work for me. And it looks like yours is leaking worse then mine was. Good news is that will fix it. Mine is dry now. Oh I try sealant and it work for a little while, but not long.
