Thanks for all the replies. Today I am driving to a Caterpillar dealer in town and another mill supply.
Fastenal has the problem of too much bare shank on the 1 3/4" length I need. The same problem at Ace with the exception they have a fully threaded flange head bolt at grade 8, but the guy there said flange heads don't work well with lock washers. I cannot really see why though. Any comments ?
And in closing, I have a "hunch" that standard fully threaded stainless bolts would be strong enough but they are definitely not grade 8 and the thing that makes me leary of them is their strength ratings have no consistency. Instead of saying (90,000lbs / 120,000lbs) like some grade 5's or (100,000/150,000 grade 8) they say, (40,000 to 90,000lbs / 70,000 to 120,000lbs) so it must just depend on variables of the chromium mix I guess. Any comments on using stainless (grade undetermined ) on motor mounts.
Flange heads will work as long as the head is larger than the lock washer. No difference regarding not being threaded all the way up the shank, you can get a die set and run the threads on up further but probably not all the way
I lucked out at the local Fastenal, they have stuff there I could not find at Fastenal online. Got some 1 3/4" lg grade 8 with only 1/2" of bare shank in black steel, and also bought some 1 3/4" grade 8 in gold colored plating with about 5/8" bare shank. And since they were so cheap I bought some grade 5, 2" lg ones with all threaded (no bare shank at all) so I am covered no matter which ones I choose.
I know a guy who is a structural engineer and I am going to see if I can get a hold of him about the strength issue. But from the tensile psi ratings on grade 5, I don't see how I would ever fail a grade 5 bolt at 21 lbs of torque even with a 400lb engine on it. I think the reason the grade 8's have some bare shank is they are used in applications with "shear" pressure on the side of them. I don't really know for sure but I would bet money the grade 2 stainless would never fail on the mount.
Granted the HD OEM bolt was grade 8 rated. Thanks for the replies and have a great turkey day.

Nobody beats http://www.boltdepot.com - they have anything you'd ever need. I have been using them for 3 years now. Beats the pants off of home depot, lowes, ace, etc.

After reading your post I checked them out. They are excellent, the site is well organized and the prices are great. I just emailed them since it appears they have what I want in grade 8 and Chrome, which would look kinda nice under the new chrome oil cooler.

+1 on bolt depot. They have everything Ive ever needed. Usually I go to Ace first, it they dont have it I go to Bolt Depot. Ive tried Home Depot, Lowes, and even a speciality bolt store and finally settled for the above 2 choices.
Ive done a nut and bolt full restoration on a 68 Triumph Bonnie using Ace and Bolt Depot for all my fastener needs (including 7+ inch engine mounting bolts in Stainless Steel.)
